This past weekend we were treated with some outstanding weather here in the North East. The only down side was the boat was at home and not on the water. I did find some really great pictures of the lake taken this weekend. I did not take them but I thought you might enjoy seeing them.

Beautiful pictures. One of the few downsides to living where you don't get real winters is a lack of fall color.

Does navigating into the inlet to your marina require as precise navigation as it looks on the third picture?

We simply must make a trip up that way some year soon.

Adjectives like gorgeous and beautiful seem to fall short of the mark.

Thanks for the images.

We were up there about five years ago and these pictures are giving me the itch to go back. Crystal Clear water and great temps in August.

The sandbar to the right of the channel is about 4-5 feet deep so drifting over it would not be a problem for most boats. It's a really popular hang out too. I used to swim there as a kid in the mid 70s, well before the marina was re-opened. When I was a kid, that marina (now one of the finest on the lake) was a run down ghost town.

Those are some great shots. Thanks for posting them.

The high speed boat scenes in the movie "On Golden Pond" were shot near the Varney Islands.

There's a huge, shallow area between the Varney Islands that is full of very interesting volcanic rock formations. The rocks look like bonsai trees. We like to snorkel there.

Fantastic photos!

Winnipesaukee is one place I really want to get back to. When DaveR and I sea-trialed my boat, the day was about as vicious a day as I could imagine. I've been out on Lake Michigan in rougher weather, but the day was windy and rainy and about 45 degrees. I had a deja vu experience as we passed the gazebo in Alton Bay, and ultimately I bought the boat, so despite the weather it was a great experience for me.

What I want, though, is to get back there on a day like the ones in the pictures. I'd even be happy without fall colors, but I definitely want to cruise the lake in our boat (I'm sure she'll be happy to be back there) and see the sights in the sun and fair wind. Sometimes, you just know that you're not getting the feel of the thing, and in the right weather, I have NO DOUBT that that lake is one place I'd never want to leave.

The channel into the marina is well marked and as Dave said, it is deep enough on either side so you generally don't get into trouble. After dark is a little trickier. We really like the Varney Island area. Great place to kayak. Its location also lets us keep an eye on the weather for a not to long ride back to the marina if need be.

This weekends weather and foliage was a 12 on a 1-10 scale. Can't remember a nicer day. Although the boat wasn't available, we still managed to spend some time in the woods setting up the second mates tree stand, fit in a short Jeep ride, and my brother "forced" me to take his HD for a ride. Every minute was savored and not taken for granted, mostly cause we know what's coming.

CJS, as nasty as the lake can get, it does get equally calm. Early and late in the season or mid week is the time to be there. It is a very hard place to leave. Work does tend to get in the way.

I’ve been around some, and there just is something special about “Winni” It can be challenging, or soothing, you decide. I believe you could spend a lifetime on the Lake and still find a little cove or hideaway you have never seen before.

Winnipesaukee is the site of one of the very first BABC gatherings, when membership was less than 500 such notables as Finger lakes Boater, ScottL, XS, MikeK, and the long since absent Ski Boat Dave and more (including myself) attended.

If you ever have the chance, Winnipesaukee is a “Must See”

Awesome pics BTW
