What do you use for VirusScanning and also spyware removal? I have McAfee, and I can't stand it. Talk about slowing my computer down. I also use Ad-A-Ware.

McAfee here too, been using it for years and it seems to be doing it's job. I think when any anti-virus updates or does it's scanning it will slow down the puter'.

I use the one with the little blue shield deal - but I also use "malwarebytes" there is a free version on the website.
virusscan sometimes wont be able to delete of move a virus so thats why I use two.
anytime you use a real time program its going to eat some process time.

For my AV it's ZoneAlarm, which they are steadily improving. Me like and me will stick with it. More difficult is the anti-spyware area. I'm currently using Spybot, but it is not nearly so polished a product as ZoneAlarm. I really should look into finding a better spyware program. You'd think somebody would do a nice job of bundling both functions into the same program, but so far most folks seem to find that separate programs give the best protection.

For virus I use avg free edition, I use the windows onecare scanner for registry and spyware and I keep track of the newest updates ad-ware, spybot, windows defender and hyjack this. O and the biggest thing I do is not use explorer, messenger or outlook as these are the biggest holes in our systems. thumb

That's what I have that come free from my internet service provider. It's called CA Security Center and comes with Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Personal Firewall and Anti-Spam. I've had no obvious issues. The Anti-Spyware runs quickly but the Anti-Virus slows the computer down during it's scheduled run and takes some time. You can easily pause it from a pop-up window if it starts up while you are working on something. You control the scheduled time it starts as well. So check w/ your service provider, many broadband providers provide a security suite.

It's limited to 3 computers so for my laptop I use Avira AntiVir and Windows Defender for spyware. Both free and again, as far as I can tell, both work fine.

Since no single Spyware program will detect/clean all known varmits out the I use SpyBot, Ad-Aware and Windows Defender for Spy/Ad ware.

I currently use Norton Anti-Virus/Internet Security for AV/Firewall protection (talk about a resource hog).

In the past I have used AVG for AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm for firewall protection, but the new computer had Norton installed from the factory and I have not got around to changing systems yet.

I use a Mac.

Viruses tend to bounce off.

Hint: You can 'significantly' speed up McAfee (actually lessen its slowdown affects) by changing one of the properties of the On-Access Scanner.

Under the All Processes - Detection tab: Uncheck the 'When reading from Disk' selection. (Leave the When writing to disk selection checked)

That made all the difference in the world to my computer. Since, 'When writing to disk' is still selected, whenever something/anything is written, it is still Virus checked.

That has worked for my setup for years.

Other tools in my toolbox:
- Zone Alarm (Firewall- Blocker alerts things coming and AND things trying to get out w/o my permission)
- AdAware (On demand Adware scanner)
- Spybot S&D (Search and Destroy) (on demand Spyware scanner)
- Spyware Guard (Resident vulnerability guard)
- Spyware Blaster (Vulnerability blocker)

For A/V products, Avira and Kaspersky are superior, IMHO, but I use McAfee because I get it free. I could also get Norton free also, but swore off it years ago, because it was bloated and had tentacles everywhere in my system. Never again....

Try the McAfee setting I noted above and see don't you get some restored speed relief.
