Just skimmed the post (I hate them btw).
Funny timing... I recently read about a traffic circle in the rural are where I grew up:
http://bangornews.com/detail/50985.html
From the comments in the article blog; not conducive to traffic flow, snow removal may be an issue & 18 wheelers could be a problem.

I think the only thing they are good for is slowing down traffic & confusing drivers.

18 wheelers are NOT a problem for properly designed round abouts. All should be equipped with slightly raised skirts to allow for their passage. LL: In that situation, was it installed to slow traffic or increase flow volume? They serve multiple purposes so have to be clear in what the objective of the installation is. smile

My big rig is a three-axle affair----with a "short" 35' cargo trailer, and there are a number of traffic circles in these parts that are impassable with that rather tame beast. A class 8 rig would destroy some of them.

That said, properly sized and designed traffic circles can be a huge boon to traffic movement. In BUSY intersections, they're a menace.

I would go further to say round-a-bouts are better equipped to handle big equipment than stop signs are. Ever tried to make a right hand turn at a stop sign with a large rig? I haven't been the driver but I can tell you 40' buses do not make right hand turns are stop signs, there is not enough room to make the turn. But the same buses have no problems in a properly designed round-a-bout.

Just passing on my thoughts D smile

And I will probably sound stupid for making comments w/out reading this entire thread...

In all honesty I think they only have three uses:
1. Slowing traffic in large cities
2. Small cities thinking they are cool to have one
3. Security

Maybe I will read the rest of the post now...

I drove big rigs back home with 40' trailers and have never destroyed a roundabout. Most of the smaller ones are either just painted on the road or are just like a pitchers mound to allow the big rigs to run over them.
