There are also commercial guidebooks that focus on the specific area you are visiting. They have more detailed information as opposed to the more attraction ad/discount ticket orientation of the free ones. They may also share information on what to do, what to avoid, getting around, history, unique features, etc.

When travelling, I also check AAA for their guidebooks.
