The boat pictured is from the 1950's I think. The idea of twins back then was to get more power than was made in a single.

Is there still a reason for twins with today's high Hp O/B,s that are now on the market?

The same reason, I think. Plus if you're 50 nm off shore and you have an engine failure, you can still get back.

You can get 300 plus Hp in a single now, could not back then. Does that make a difference?

Or maybe you need 750 HP?

So, only if you can not get your Hp needs in one motor, you would get two, or three, then.

For far off-shore, you want at least two no matter what the HP desired is.

What he said. The serious off-shore rod-n-reel boys almost always run twins. They would rather run 2x150 than 1x300.

Heck, I've even seen quite a few small (17' or so) Whaler's with twins on them.

These days, you might see small twins on C-Dory's and Arima's.

We had a late 60s vintage Larson with twin 18hp Johnsons when I was a kid. I was a happy 12 year old when we traded it in on a 21' Starcraft with a 165 hp Merc I/O.

Most commercial fish boats tend to run singles, though.
