   Darn Muskrats! del.icio.us
   Darn Muskrats! digg it
Ok so in the past two weeks up on shore near our docks I have found two small dead muskrats with only their heads eaten!!
Any ideas what might get a muskrat and only eat it's head and not the meaty part of it's body? We like to see them dead since they have been undermining ur shoreline and are making it unstable.

Hawk? Coon? Cat? Aliens? Ozzy Osborn?

How disgusting.... this kind of discussion makes me want to eat my own head. Could be a new bent for the Republicans & the Bush Crime Family... starting on the little guys before they launch a wide spread attack on more mainstream Democrats.

Maybe we could talk Jesse Jackson into eating his head? Just a thought..... we could always hope for a trend in the media 'talking heads'..... Live "on air" self head ingestion. Might be a reality show I could get into........

I assume most saw this item from the recent midwest floods?

Burrowing muskrat causes levee to fail in Missouri

Pretty amazing what havoc the little rodents can cause.

Maybe you have some mink around as well? Does this sound like what may have happened?

Quote:
Mink may occasionally kill domestic poultry around farms. They typically kill their prey by biting them through the skull or neck. Closely spaced pairs of canine tooth marks are sign of a mink. Mink will attack animals up to the size of a chicken, duck, rabbit, or muskrat. While eating muskrats, a mink will often make an opening in the back or side of the neck and skin of the animal by pulling the head through the hole as it feeds. Like some other members of the weasel family, mink occasionally exhibit “surplus killing” behavior (killing much more than they can possibly eat) when presented with an abundance of food, such as in a poultry house full of chickens. Mink may place many dead chickens neatly in a pile. Mink can eat significant numbers of upland nesting waterfowl or game bird young, particularly in areas where nesting habitat is limited.

EDIT: Reading further it could be an owl as well?...though they just mention fowl as prey...also read a bit re: raccoons and headless fowl carcasses. Interesting, let us know what you find out.

Not a problem animal around here. Not like armadillos and beavers. Oklahoma has one of the strongest dam inspection and maintenance programs. Part of the inspections, is to find and fill any burrows detected. Most people don't believe it, but the two biggest risks for a dam is animal burrows and trees. Trees will penetrate deep within a dam structure and create pathways. However, if not removed at an early stage, it is sometimes better to leave the tree. Once the tree has died, the roots will rot. That can create hidden voids in the dam.

sounds like you either got yourself a sicko muskrat serial killer on the loose (and don't you just hate it when THAT happens) or the muskrat mafia was after those two and didn't want them to be identified afterwards. the little muskrats are gonna hate this, but it's probably time for a curfew until the whole thing blows over.

If we have a serial Muskrat killer or the Muskrat Mafia are after them, they need to stop by the house and I'll take them to where their little hideout/love shack is located.
I'll give them $50.00 a body. thumb

We do have one of the muskrat traps but the water has been so high I have not been able to set it. They had a litter of 3 or 4 this spring so it's time to thin the little buggers. Although something is doing a fine job so far.
