New boat buyer here. I found this boat and was wondering if this sounded like a good deal: 2004 MONTEREY MONTURA 228 SI* 23' MERCRUISER 5.0 MPI,BRAVO 3. The list price is $26,995 including the trailer. I'm not sure of the HP or hours on the engine. Any input on the price and opinions of this particular boat would be appreciated. Thanks.

We bought a brand new left over 04 208 SI with Volvo 5L (carb) for $25K last summer. All I can say is WE LOVE the boat! If the one you're looking at has low hrs, I would buy it. Of course you need to have it look over by a pro. to make sure it's in good/tip top condition. Good luck with the purchase.

Sounds like a decent deal, providing everything checks out with a survey and sea trial. IMO, the
5.0L is just adeqeuate for that boat.If you plan on watersports , snappy acceleration, and are carrying 4 to 5 people, a 5.7L would make a noticeable difference.

I agree with Capn M ... "just adequate". Personally, I'd deem that underpowered for a 23 'er. No way should you buy that motor in that boat without driving it with what you consider a load.

I remember my first boat - underpowered 17' w/ 3.0, struggling to get a skier up with 2 people in the boat. It just wasn't fun.

It does sound like a decent deal. Take a sea trial and figure out if it'd be enough for what you need. And if possible, take whomever you're going to have on the boat normally (spouse, kids, etc.) That's the true test. Most dealers will take you out if you're really serious about the boat, no matter what time of year it is. I took mine for a sea trial in January when it was 33 degrees out!

It really depends on what you plan on doing with the boat. If you want "blow your hair back" speed then the 5.0L will be underpowered. I don't think anyone can tell you how it will perform unless they have the same setup...you really need to test ride it with the load and conditions you will be using it under.

Monterey makes some really nice boats and I have not heard anyone unhappy with one. Good luck

I was thinking the same aboutthe 5.0L. However, based on discussions observed on this board, I thought the Bravo 3 prop would assist in the hole shot for pulling power. I have 2 young sons (3 and 6) so water sports are a while away. There will be some skiiing for adults in the meantime.

The B3 will enhance the performance. But as others have said.. adequate power/speed is in the eye of the beholder. Some people would have no less than a 5.7 in that boat, others would feel right at home with a 4.3L. It all depends on what YOU feel is best.
Personally, I would test drive that boat with a full load/full tank of gas. If you deem it acceptable, then I think you are getting a good deal. If you have ANY reservations whatsoever, walk. They will only come back to haunt you.

I would not worry too much about the 5.0 mpi with the B3. If that is what it is, then it's a 260 horse engine on a 21'6" boat. It's not a 23' boat. It does weigh 3800lbs., though.

However, I was on a similarly sized boat that weighed 3400lbs. It had Volvo 5.0 GXi (270hp) with a single (sx) drive. I thought that boat performed very nicely - even at 3600 feet.

So, I would get a test ride to confirm, but it's probably would be just fine. I like the 228. It's a very sharp boat.

I have a 5005 Cobalt 200 that's 20'4" w/Merc 5.0 MPI Bravo 3. It is 4120 Lbs. with a full fuel tank and w/ 4 adult I was able to hit 52 MPH and that was the dealer driving it. Up at Lake tahoe 6200 feet with prop change to 24 pitch with everything equal it topped out at 44 MPH. I also am having a new updated ECM put in because of a warm start issue at high altitude the end of April begining of May. YEA! Mercruiser thanks for listening.

it does look nice, if that's the boat. but see that fin on the outdrive, isn't that to help with planing? i wonder if previous owner thought it underpowered...

Good looking boat. I am worried about the power of the 5.0L. I'm a gear head by trade (automotive engineer), so having alot under the hood does matter to me (under the stern in this case).

After Adversary98's post, and looking at the specs on the Monterey site, the 5.0L might be better than I originally thought...especially with the B3. The weight is only 400lbs heavier than mine. I thought it was a 23' boat, but is only 21'6" w/out SP.

I would bet with the fuel injected version you could reach WOT of 50mph, and the B3 will help with hole shot.

HOWEVER, as most have stated....you will only be able to tell for sure with a real conditions test ride.

I chose the larger cubes....well worth it, and the Monterey is nice to look at.

That worry will always haunt you... and turn into regret sooner or later. Trust me.

That's a trolling flap, I believe, intended to slow the boat down. Notice it has a fishfinder.
