Hi all. It's been a long time since I logged on here and that's my fault. I think most of you know that I have a running battle with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. I underwent a series of chemo treatments and those really knocked me on my butt. They also messed with me memory quite a bit.

So somewhere along the line, after not being on BABC for quite awhile, I forgot about all you great folks. When I'd log into the 'puter and run through the sites I often used, I felt as though something was missing but couldn't put my finger on it.

This morning, while goofing off on Youtube something clicked that reminded me about BABC so here I am. Funny how the mind works. What's even more strange is that when I logged in, the page that opened up had the thread about the trip Doug and I did with Stuart when we took his boat down to CA. Strange coincidence.

So here I am, for better or worse (hmmm, those words sound vaguely familiar!). Not sure how long I'll hang out here. Lots of stories to tell but I'm not going to bore you with them now.

It's nice to be back.

Hi Mike,

Glad you are still around to tell your stories. Must be fate that I checked in here after a long time away to find you here.

Be well my friend and regale us with your tales when you can.

There won't be any NEW boating stories.

As some of you know, I have stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. Following my chemo treatments my balance has been all screwed up. I walk like a drunken sailor (wow, have we all been there a time or two!!) and when you combine that with a rolling deck it's a recipe for an unplanned swim and a disaster.

Two friends and I cruised the boat down the Columbia, across the infamous Columbia Bar, then up around the coast to the Strait of Juan de fuca and on to Seattle. After a failed start, the trip took us a week and we eventually got another go at it a month later.

If one has to get rid of a boat he absolutely loves, this was the perfect trip to do it. My wife made me promise that I would not get out on the deck and the other two guys agreed. If you want to read about my story, here's a link to it in the Club Sea Ray site. So grab a cold one, get comfortable and enjoy yourself!

I still have one boat, a 13' Boston Whaler Sport with a 40hp Evinrude but I'm getting it cleaned up for sale.

It's not coincidence that I also opened BABC and there he was. I would be included in a special group of people all over the world would who say that this was NOT COINCIDENCE. It was the big guy who watches over all of us. We don't know for sure, but there might just be a reason that Mike and the rest of us came together. Perhaps, if we pray together, it might make a difference some how.

How do you respond to a post with this kind of bad news? I thought the treatments had nipped the cancer in the bud...or is that butt?
Mike's impact is one of the reasons this board has stayed around for over 20 years.
I've had the pleasure to meet in person when Lady Bug gave him a photo album she put together. He was traveling through town and we all met up at a local mexican restaraunt.. The same building, but different restaruant, that I met my wife to be when we were in High school.
I also was lucky enough to have an overnight in Pasco the night of his yacht clubs annual Christmas parade down the Columbia river. What a great time that I still talk about with my FO's whenever flying into Pasco. I still look to where Beachcomber was parked every time I leave. He and Galley Wench were great hosts, even after I threatened that I was going to bring a bottle of red wine onboard.
Keep the stories coming as long as you can. Often times old photos beat new adventures

Take Care of yourself Mike. Stay in touch. You have my email. I had my prostate removed last year after a biopsy came back positive. I had monitored my PSA for years at work which was always around 1. Then over 2 years it climbed to 4.07 which concerned me. My doctor said lets monitor it and I told her, NO. I want it checked out. The Urologist suggested biopsy and boom. Fricken postive. Took me two weeks or so to tell my wife as I needed to get my head straight and be calm and all knowledgeable to calm her fears. It really sucks getting old as your body falls apart, but your mind is still says I can do this.

There are many different kinds of cancer as I have found out from my oncologist. The one I have will never go into remission nor will it ever go away.

But ya know what? If it doesn't get any worse than it is now I can live with this. (Bad pun, sorry) I wake up in the morning and it takes a couple of minutes of walking around the house to get my legs loosened up. Then Sailor (my 14yr old Lab) and I head out for our walk. That takes about a half hour and I let him set the pace. He sniffs and piddles as we walk along the river and after about 1/2 hour it's time for both of us to head home for another fun filled day.

The biggest downfalls from all this are probably my lack of strength and balance. Picking up a 50lb bag of dog food used to be a piece of cake. Now I buy the 20lb size. Tina, my Galley Wench, won't let me get up on a ladder, even a step ladder unless she's standing there holding onto my butt so I don't fall.

I've lost about 40 lbs (I needed to do that!) and 5" off my waist. I've gone from a 43 waist down to about a 38 and from a XXL shirt down to an XL, but the upside to that is I got to pick up a few new clothes.

My goal at this point is to make it to 90 years of age. That's 15 years from now, so that's doable.

It's good to be back!

I think that's just an excuse to grab your butt.... especially since it's gotten sexier with the loss of weight..
