Mark, that was always one of my biggest fears when approaching a dock. Fortunately it never happened...knock on wood, or concrete as the case may be.

Here is another view. It hit the dock twice, the second was the worst. I read it was a computer malfunction and it has happened before on another "boat" yacht.

GFC, you've used thrusters so know how well they work.
Was that mud being kicked forward due to side thrusters or reverse props? Were they working against each other?

My boat has electronic ZF Mathers Micro Commander shifter/ throttles that I love, but I worry that some day it will not shift out of gear while docking and something like that will happen.

The mud that was kicked up was from the props, probably in full reverse. I didn't see any water being pushed around by thrusters.

I suspect there was a problem with the shifters because (a) he was coming in way too hot, (b) he didn't put the boat into reverse until it was very obvious he was going to hit something ahead of him and (c) once he hit and backed away it again shifted into forward. The second time he hit the stbd engine was still in forward gear.

A ship that size must be piloted by a captain, probably one with an unlimited tonnage rating, and unless he was REALLY PISSED at the owner that caused him to intentionally hit the dock twice, there must have been a shifter malfunction.

My guess, FWIW.

You can tell the dock is supposed to "give way" when the yacht tries to "stand on" it. I'm pretty sure that's how navigation rules work.

From a brief read, that boat is entirely computer controlled and the software crashed at the worst possible moment. The captain stated he chose running into the wooden dock as the lesser of two evils.

I'd have hated to have been in his shoes!
