Boy and I HOT. I just got my bill to renew my subscription for our local paper. Let me explain about this paper. Weekdays it's about as thin as an old comic book. One section. Usually about 8 pages. No Saturday delivery any more. Sundays it's about 3 thin sections. Wednesdays it has all the food ads. And the "news" is always 2 days late.

Now get this: The bill for a 52 week renewal was $1,222. That's $3.47 a day! But wait, they don't have a Saturday paper any longer so that makes it $3.90 per day. Four bucks a day for a comic book thick paper.

I wrote them a not so nice note using a Sharpie on the face of their statement and will send it back to them. Adios Mutha's.

I dont get any newspapers now. The last one I subscribed to was Investor Business Daily.

The younger generation doesn’t read the newspaper. So these companies have fewer and fewer subscribers. That means the remaining have to foot the cost of the facilities that create the paper.

Everything is online now so why read a paper. A dead industry, I get news on my phone, news on TV, Only fat old white boys read the paper and we are dying out quick.

OK, I'm and old white boy but I don't fall into the "fat" category. No offense taken by the comment, but I've been on a many-year diet that has been quite successful. Several years ago I weighed 254. I've been doing "push aways"* since then and have gotten down to ~208 and my waist size has dropped from 44 to 36. Even with this past year of being quarantined in the house I've managed not to gain any weight.

As to the newspaper, I do get my news on my phone and the 'puter and my Kindle, but I still like to read some things that are not carried electronically. I guess that's about to end since I refuse to pay that exorbitant amount. I will be running up to the corner market on Sundays (about 1.5 miles) to pick up the paper from now on.

I am glad no offense was taken as no offense was meant. I was speaking generally as technology changes, a lot of companies are going by the wayside because they don't keep up with the times and embrace new technology, new tastes, whatever the business is. Our age grew up with newspapers, probably even delivered newspapers when we were kids. Who reads them now, very few. Then they have the audacity to charge $1222 for something that is useless. A dying news medium.

Great news on the weight loss, I too need to loose 40 to 50lbs. Been at it for a year since moving here to TN. Plenty of walking trails one of which I am building next to my creek. Also splitting wood with an axe to get the heart a pumpin.

I haven't noticed a USA Today in the hotel lobby since I don't know when.
Used to be standard Pilot reading material, but not even that anymore.
Haven't subscribed to the Local paper in years, and totally disgusted by 90% of the online articles that just turn into opinion pieces of rehashed tweets.

Ours keeps going up. We have cut back to just Sundays. It is nothing compared to what it used to be. They keep raising the bill - wife calls to cancel & they magically go back to old price. Kind of sad to see what is happening in that industry but young kids just want to look at social media & could care less about the paper.

I still get the local paper as the local news is not easily found on the internet. Like reading about high school sports. I think I pay $100 a year.

$100 a year I could easily live with. $100 per month ain't so easy for me to swallow.

A grand per year is some crazy pricing! I subscribe to 2 "traditional" newspapers solely b/c I want to support traditional journalism vs whatever passes for social media news. I think the Charlotte Observer is $125/year now. Actually putting people on the ground and following up leads takes money. So many local, and even decently large city, newspapers are struggling since classifieds, etc. have gone away that the local beat reporter investigating local politicians, etc. has lost resources. Reading a brief quote/blurb about someone and lighting them on Twitter is not my idea of journalism. I spent years reading the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times and WSJ (sometimes IBD) cover-to-cover on the train in Chicago so I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for supporting them.

That said I only get the digital versions and honestly I never read them coner-to-cover any more. For every day I use Flipboard on my phone which is just a news aggregator like Apple News. Some of the stuff is free, some is limited # of free articles per month, some are behind a paywall and of course the articles from the sources I subscribe to are available in it as well. I have a few other news service apps I check in on as well.

I have subscribed to The Week as well for a number of years. It physically arrives once per week and aggregates articles from various sources across a range of subjects. It's a little pricey but on a suggestion from a friend I started getting it years ago to throw on the kitchen table in an attempt to get my kids to read an article or two about current events with breakfast. I have to say it worked fairly well. Only 1 of 3 is left at home now so I will probably cancel it in a couple years. I also subscribe to a few other magazines as well, like a tech one and an econ/biz one, again partly just to get them on the table in front of my kids but also for me. Of course I also get my A.T. Journeys magazine from the ATC ...but even they have cut back on the number of issues per year.
