athiker, those ships have cargo holds that are separated by steel walls. When one is breached, the water will spread no further inside the hull as long as the walls between each hold is intact.
Ah, right makes sense, thanks. I think that is what took down the Titanic....the 'berg scraped across too many of the bulkhead compartments....plus they weren't full hull height.
