When I try to crank the boat it will not start. It acts like it is not In neutral. I move the shift to forward and reverse and wiggle it around and Back to neutral. When I turn the key it makes no sound. Do anyone have an idea what the problem is.

Have you checked the safety kill switch?

Need more information. What brand, model, and year is the engine? Do any electrical systems on the boat currently function normally? If yes, do they continue to function normally when you are trying to crank the engine?

What Joe said first. Though, if my kill switch is out it will crank and not start. I actually pull it in the spring and crank a few times to get oil moving before starting it first time in the spring. I have a VP. I don't know if Merc is the same.

Neutral safety switch will prevent it from turning over and I'm guessing it is either bad or there is a broken wire.

As Dave said, give us specifics so we can help.

Engine, drive, age, etc.

This is a MerCruiser 5.0. It is not the Kill Switch. The Dash Board instruments (temp, oil pressure etc) do not work, however, the wipers, blower and lights do work.

There should be a 50 amp circuit breaker on the engine. it might be tripped. The main engine wiring harness connector might have loosened up. The negative battery connection on the engine might be loose or corroded.

Thinking about what you said does not work. When was the last time everything worked? What has been done since that time? Do you have a battery disconnect switch? Dash circuit breakers tripped? Battery connections? Battery charged?
Look for the easy things first.

Try changing out the ignition switch. They're cheap, and even if that's not the problem, you probably need a new one anyway... wink
