I am about the same age but haven't been able to get up on one ski the last few years, must be getting old. Now that we don't have a good boat to ski from, I think I am just going to sell my skis.

Waywego, yes getting up is hard for me now. Used to be a piece of cake. I’m out of shape and it takes a lot of leg strength. I got up on two and immediately dropped one. At the end of the video you can see me hunting for the dropped ski.

Yes, my daughter has 3 kids and goes slow for their water sports. I had to tell her several times to go faster. She’s afraid to hurt me.

I never skied much because we didn't own a power boat. I could get up and ski on two but never could grasp the concept of slalom. Nicely done.

Thanks GFC. My “coming out party” with my grandkids did spark some interest. Although it was funny to see their jaw drop as they didn’t realize I can slalom ski. My oldest granddaughter (age 10) decided to try slalom. She was getting good at two skies. Look what she did the following day.

What a brave young lady. I should show that video to my 10 year old grandson and see if he's interested in learning how to ski. I could pull him behind the Whaler. I'm not sure he'd go for it, he's not the bravest kid in the neighborhood. Good athlete but I'd bet he likes to have both feet on the ground, not on skis!

You are a lucky Grandpa. I have five granddaughters from 8 to 16. My bucket list includes water skiing next to each one of them. so far, only one. The 14-year-old is close to trying, but when it is time to get into the boat with the skis, she changes her mind.

Oh, yea. I'm 74 and still skiing, if only I could find somebody who will drive the boat for my rides--wife has refused to tow anybody. Needs lesson, she says.

Jack, you are definitely a hero to those of us who no longer can ski, for whatever reason. If I were closer I'd volunteer in a heartbeat to be your boat driver.

Yes. I am very lucky to be able to do it. Believe it or not, I learned how to ski at age 9. I used to just stand on the dock while everyone else skied, waiting for my turn. Actually, if I had the opportunity, I believe I would still do that.

That's great!...awesome that it inspired the 10 year old to give it a go! She looked very comfortable and will never go back to 2 skis, that's for sure. If that was her first time imagine what she will be doing after half a dozen runs. I have missed the last 2 seasons due to knee surgery on my lead leg (tennis not skiing) but plan to be back at it next summer now that I've built up enough strength again.

I will tell you that a big fat ski makes all of the difference getting up. I haven't quite hit 60 but I can see it from here, so I have 3 widths that I use depending on the weight I'm carrying at the time! Honestly though the big HO Radius that I have is just so easy and let's me do 90% of what I want to do back there that I have used it almost all of the time the last few years. I never could get the dropping of a ski down for some reason. It doesn't slice through the wake as nice or turn as sharp but its still a lot of fun...and like I said...way easier...and just a smooth ride. If you lean too far it will lose its edge and you will just sort of lay down in the water, but you learn how far you can go and its still pretty far. It also let's you use a slower boat speed...which used to never be a concern for me...but now...well...with a few injuries under my belt I'm fine with going slower now. Anyway, I'd rather be out there doing it on something than it being such a chore that I don't do it at all. Keep slicing and dicing!

I should get the fat ski as I always have trouble getting my drivers to go fast enough.

Here is the current HO offering...the Hovercraft. Holy crap though the cost of fiberglass must be through the roof at $400 w/o bindings! I would definitely watch resale websites instead.

Here are my skis (click the thumbnail below), the Radius is on the right. The Connelly F1X is a great ski, but wish I had gotten the next length up. Lots of guests have really liked the Kidder Parabolic in the middle over the years but for some strange reason I get water spray in my face when I use it.



One last thing. If you scroll down to the bottom of this link to the Tail Weighting System, that is the most amazing thing to help a beginning skier. No more skis flopping left and right before the start, it makes it easy to keep them vertical and parallel for the start but lets you ski pretty normally once you are up. I've had great results with it as it just lets people relax and focus on getting up vs struggling to keep buoyant skis lined up pre-start and getting exhausted. You can remove weights one-by-one as they get more comfortable and improve too.
