Great Sacandaga Lake Mayfield,...
Started getting water in the boat, which is unusal as it normally has a dry bilge. I tried to dry the aft bilge out but kept getting water. As it turns out the transom is saturated. I found a small crack near the outdrive bracket. The marina I do business with said the transom was saturated. I had the boat surveyed to see if there were any other problems, and there are not. So......this winter, the boat is going to get a major amount of work. The engine has to come out, everything has to be stripped off the transom inside and out. I am not thrilled as it will be expensive.

I was thinking about having the outdrive refinished in the process, but nobody locally does them. Can anybody recommend a place I can ship the outdrive and transom bracket to?

That stinks about the transom. What kind of boat do you have? Does the marina doing the work have any leads on someone to go thru outdrive?

Your profile lists an 2005 Bayliner 289. From what I see that is likely a MercCruiser 350 Magnum. Anyone on this forum from New York state that can recommend a good Merc shop?

Wow . . . 15 year old boat needing a transom re-do . . . . bug_eyes ouch

Just be ready for the marina to come back with some more joy once they 'open' things up. It is never as simple as it initially seems.

Does insurance cover any of it?

I'd look long & hard at estimates vs how much i love the boat & consider parting it out,

If transom is bad stringers would be a real concern to me. If they are bad that's a big job.

Refinish the outdrive? You may not need anything more than some diluted acid to dissolve the calcium deposits. Merc's run hot on plane and water spray tends to weld itself to the paint.

I notice Home Depot sells 30% acid-strength VINEGAR. Cut down to 10% or 15% with water should work great. It's a slow process, but easy, just spray on, wait till the smoke stops, repeat about 3 times, rinse with water, do it again, repeat again until the acid spray gets NO reaction...

Me, I use muriatic acid but I'm going to try vinegar on our Regal...

This was our little Bayliner when it was honest, only 6 months old (yeah, we gots hard, gucky water!)

=============
What I used was a pressure washer, 'The Works' toilet bowl cleaner reduced to 10% strength, applied with a garden sprayer. And that's it.
I NEVER used a brush. When done I used a little Dri-Wash n' Guard and a towel to shine 'er up.

So before a spendy refinish, try some acid and a pressure washer smile

And good luck with the transom. Seems a daunting task to me, but I've seen a few youtubes where people make it look easy...

Oalic acid also works. It is the main ingredient in Slimy Grimy. I bought some Oxalic acid in crystal form, mix it with water per instructions. I have used it for a few years to get the grime off the boat. I think it actually works better than Slimy Grimy. A lot less expensive, too. I agree with FR about not brush, except our montery has a complicated air entrapment bottom. You can see it in the photo..

I keep forgetting about oxalic acid because I never use it! I should, because as I understand it, it's probably the most effective calcium remover with the least side effects (like muriatic acid darkening certain grades of stainless)...

Where do you get oxalic acid? My outdrive could use a good cleaning,

I got mine a few years ago from
https://www.factorydirectchemicals.com/products/99-6-pure-oxalic-acid-powder

I found them to be great customer service professionals. When I did my search, I couldn't find the oxalic acid any less expensive than their price.

If you go to their website, look around a bit and find what look like tremendous products.
