Hi All,

Bit of an embarrassing question after all of these years, but figured best to ask. What fluid goes in the reservoir just in front of the oil filter? It seems to have gotten a little low.

Power steering fluid? Any particular type? Its been so long since I messed with it I've forgotten.

Please see pic and thanks for any help.

It's power steering fluid. I don't know what Merc calls for. I know I have had a combination fluid for both the PS and the tilt/trim on the drive.

In my PS system I switched to Royal Purple and flushed it.

See if you can get a color sample.

Red is probably Dexron 3. If it is clear, it is likely a combo PS/Trim fluid.

Thanks Ken, plan to order some as soon and get down to check the color. I can't recall if it's red or clear. I know my trim fluid is clear, but have a feeling this one is red.

OH, thanks but on my engine that is off camera to the left. Its in a translucent plastic reservoir.

Was just watching a show that was saying it is important to change power steering fluid every so often. As mine has never been done in the time I have owned it going to do so this fall. They said in time it accumulates water in the fluid

It's fortunately relatively easy, especially with the ignition kill switches in boats.

Suck the fluid out of the reservoir, fill with clean, remove the low pressure return and put in a bucket. Turn it over a few revolutions, top of the tank, rinse and repeat until clean fluid comes out of the low pressure return. Top it off and you are done.

Dug out my books. I am pretty sure we have the same engine:

Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid
- Power Steering (or Dexron III ATF)
- Power Trim System (or SAE 10W-30 motor oil)

Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube
- Sterndrive

Quicksilver 4-Cycle Marine Engine Oil 25W-40
- Crankcase

I will simply add that I would be reluctant to mix motor oil and PS/Dex together. Likely not an issue, but I would still be reluctant unless there was no other choice.

Thanks all, and thanks James for the how-to as I was going to ask as I'm sure it probably NEVER been changed. Certainly not since about 2004 when I bought it.

Didnt mean for it to read that way, it all depends on the way the info is sorted.

No worries. It was fine. Most manuals seem to call for the (or SAW 10w-30). I would just prefer not to mix them. Some people may not give it a second thought. Sorry if it came across wrong.

So I checked it and honestly it was so dirty it was hard to tell. It looks pretty straight forward to drain the reservoir at least so thinking I will drain, fill, run and repeat with the Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid. It was dealer maintained the 4 years before I bought it so I'm betting that is what they used. Thanks again.
