A friend of mine took his boat to Lake Powell for a week, did a lot of hard boating. The lube was changed when winterized, and he used the boat once I think for a day before the Powell trip. When they got back he checked the boat out and found the lube in the drive was jet black. AND-- had a snick of water in it, just a hint of gray (not mayonnaise) and a bit of white foam at the drain plug. The drive didn't act or sound funny, and there were no shavings or shiny's in the lube. Pretty normal except for it was BLACK... And it's never done this before. But, he's never did a week of hard boating with it either...

I was wondering, if the drive was getting warm being on plane, sometimes for over an hour at a time, easy to do at Powell. We spoke about drive showers... AND I was wondering that if heat is why the oil's black and being on plane for extended times is the reason for the heat, could the sudden cooling of the drive when finally slowing down cause a vacuum situation(?) where a bit of water could be drawn in at the prop, or?

Lube he's using is full synthetic 75-90, not sure the brand...

I know the big Cummins in our motorhome will turn 8 gallons of Rotella black within a few hours, but I have little experience with synthetics...

Have never really paid close attention to how quickly it turns black. I tend to change it each year & forget it until next year.

I wouldn't expect it to turn black. This thread reminded me that I need to drain and refill my drive.

Usually it is a dark gold after a season or two. Sometimes a hint of grey comes out at the tail end.

Shouldn't be any water in it. Seems like something is amiss.

I appreciate the feedback-- He had a trip planned the end of the month but can't find a mechanic available to work on it until August. I told him 'if it was me' I'd just refill it and take it out for day run and check it out afterward. He's afraid of doing more damage. But I convinced him to test drive it on muffs... fill it with fresh lube and run it in gear, switching fwd/rev every so often, for 1/2 hour or so-- get a mechanics stethoscope from HF and listen to the innards, check it's temperature, then shut it down and wait a day... get a glass container to catch the lube, check for water when removing the bottom plug, check the plug for metal bits, and freezer the lube for a day and check for ice crystals..

I used VP synthetic gear lube in my outdrive and it would always drain out dark amber except one year it came out black as tar. No unusual use on the boat so it was quite a surprise. I had the oil analyzed and a few of the numbers were elevated but no red flags. I switched to Amsoil synthetic and it's been fine since. Not sure what caused it to go so black but it was suggested maybe it was a change in the VP oil.
If it were me I'd change the oil and run it with a watchful eye.

FR, Not sure if you know but synthetic lube/oil doesn't get like mayonnaise when mixed with water.

Happened to me once on my last boat with the Volvo DP where the lube got black. No water intrusion that I could tell. Flushed it with cheap gear lube before filling back with synthetic. No issue before or after.

Well--- About a month after selling our Chaparral 260ssi (thru a broker), I spied it coming up the launch ramp at our harbor. I introduced myself to the new owners, explained I had a couple of parts to give them (short piece of water tank line and a manual), and asked them how they like the boat-? Guy says "we LOVE it, couldn't be happier, I just thought it would be faster..."

Faster?

"can't even get it up to 40"...

Umm, you mean 50 maybe? This thing would cruise at 37mph at 3300 rpm, never had ANY trouble hitting 40...!

While chatting his wife was pulling it toward the parking slots, and when I turned and looked at the back of the boat my heart skipped a beat.

--there's why it won't go 40 I sez, while snow white oil was sadly oozing out of the dipstick hole of the DP drive, OMG... Guy said the broker changed out the engine oil and gear lube- full synth on both- before they took delivery. This was their 4th trip out. I told him he needs to have a stern talk with the broker about the missing dipstick and what to do about the drive. Haven't seen them since.

The 'mayonnaise' wasn't the consistency of putty like I've seen normal oil do, it still had some 'run' to it but not much.

(and it DID cruise 37 @ 3300, most 'relaxed' boat I ever owned!)

Wow that would stink for the outdrive. Wonder what the long term effects were.
