The lake where our house is located provides flood control for areas down stream. My lake is accutally the beginning of many chain of lakes that stretches from Roanoke, VA to the Atantic Ocean. The Roanoke areas has received over 5" of rain the past couple of days therefore my lake is rising.

Here are some pictures of normal pond

The position of the lift did not move in any of these pictures

Pretty much any boating is not happening this weekend due to the high waters, that is fine as we still don't have the boat at the lake yet and this weekend is typically a very busy weekend.

The storage building that is on the dock is where our kayaks are stored, they are getting wet along with some folding chairs however the life jackets and paddles are hung from the ceiling so they're still dry.

The rain is over at the lake and has since made its way to my home state where I have gutters overflowing due to pollen balls stuck in the gutters.

Seems like every Memorial day we have the same thing. Our lake is currently 10' over normal pool.

OH, that's pretty amazing. One would not think that 5" of rain would have that much effect on the water level. There must be a lot of rivers and streams that empty into the lakes.

We have flood control provided by the dams on the Columbia and to some extent, the dams on the Snake. Our water level fluctuates by as much as 3' from the high during spring runoff to the low levels near the end of summer. Not usually dramatic changes like you got though.

Maybe I am not seeing the obvious. If this is a regular happening, why aren't floating docks and higher piers that are high enough to be above
full pool (plus) so that they don't get flooded ? Between the dock and the pier, there is a gangway to traverse from one to the other.

That's what we use. We seldom get flooded because they open and close the gates to control elevation. If the water goes way down, we unhook the gangway at the pier, drop it, and push the dock and gangway out to deeper water. Getting to the dock would now be from the ground.

Have a great day of boating

The last time the lake flooded like this was back in 1985 so this isn't a normal occurance. The elevation of the dam is at 800 feet and normal full pond is 795, normal operating range is between 793 and 795. It was nice having the water above the dock as it made getting in the kayaks easier and we were able to clean the docks.

OH, I think that's called making lemonade when you're handed lemons.
