Hey Mark,
Are you anywhere near the fires that are ravaging CA? I hope not.

I think Mark is about 100 miles south.

Its in the hills about 15 miles from us on the coast. Some co-workers evacuated, but noting but smoke and ash where we are down wind.

Ken, thanks for the reply. I forgot you are also down there. I hope all is well.

Our skies have been very smoky for the past week or so because of the fog. We went for a long ride yesterday with some friends and when we got further west it was difficult to see the hills about 5 miles away.

Stay safe.

Were good. They are gettting it under control. Evacuations lifted.

Lucky the Santa Ana winds died off late Thursday.

Air quality still not great and ash was everywhere on Friday AM.

They have turned the corner.

The fire earlier in the week near Simi Valley/Moorpark had another co-worker and his family (wife and daughters) assisting other horse owners evacuating their animals to local holding areas and fairgrounds. Interesting how some horses readily load (experienced show/traveling horses) and others have to be managed up to an hour. My co-worker said they will institute a training effort/program for the horses and the people in preparation for any future event.

First responders are awesome. (Thank you GFC for your past service!)

Now THAT I can relate to, and you're welcome. It was my pleasure to serve.

We have a true hero living in our area now. General James Mattis grew up in this area and has retired here. Can't wait to run into him around town somewhere. Normally I'm not one who is star struck. I think I would be with him.

Uh. We had an 8-acre fire four blocks from us. It came up extremely fast. It was arson. We kept hearing BIG helicopters overhead (at night) for about 20 minutes and decided to go see what was going on. Walked a few blocks, getting amazed by the number of fire trucks from several communities, and how fast they were moving, One right behind another. Met a couple of mountain bikers (Man, those LED lights are bright). They were confronted by the fire before any sirens were heard. That was about 9:30 PM. They were happy to get out of the area.

It appears that those in charge have not held back this year on fires in our community (we've had two). They get right on it with all they've got. Man, hose snorkel helicopters are something else. Here's a couple links about them:

Residents near the fire were evacuated. Their street was open by morning.

Arching/sparking power lines and homeless emcampment fires are believed among some contributors.

Then there was that garbage truck which dumped its burning load....company protocol to save the truck.....

The fires are North, East and South of me. West is the ocean. Relatives in Moorpark, a little south of KenDog were evacuated.
We are safe and sound.

I don't think most people realize just how loooooong California is until you've driven it north to south. So those of us who don't live there, when we hear about all the fires we can easily get the image of the whole state burning. Seems like they're getting the fires under control, and that's a good thing.

With all the fires that California has, I wouldn't think there is anything else left to burn.

My mother-in-law lives in Florida and when she hears that snow is forecasted in PA she thinks it is right over our house however I have a 5 hour drive to the opposite corner of the state which is Erie. This is also pretty close to where we purchased our boat back in 2010.

Sure are interesting times out west. Parents were evacuated this time around in NorCal and sisters were nervous in Norcal and Socal. In the last 2 years, every one of my immediate family that still lives in CA have either been evacuated due to fire or chosen to evacuate due to health concerns, proximity, and air quality. The only 2 of us that haven't been evacuated don't live in CA anymore.

I'm sure they'll ban fires to fix the problem.

Yeah, that should work well. Thus far it has worked well with things like banning convicted felons from possessing guns, people using illegal drugs, murders, rapes, assaults, drunk driving..... Well, you get my drift.
