To the point that I don't ever answer the phone anymore.
Thinking of changing my voicemail greeting to something along the lines of
"You've reached XXX-XXXX due to the high volume of scam phone calls I no longer answer unknown numbers
If this is a legitimate call leave your name and number and I'll call you back.
If this is about my taxes, social security account, the student loans I don't have, the lottery I didn't really win, or my credit cards that are going to be shut off I won't call you back so put me on the 'I'm onto you list that you should not waste your time robo dialing' "
Worth doing or do they even hear what is said when the phone picks up?

It is amazing the amount of scam calls we get.

Phone rings at least 1 or 2 times per night.

Anyone we know uses our cell phones.

Thing that gets me is that they have gotten my cell phone number now and I'm getting the calls on it too.

Check your phone for the ability to block numbers and delete them from the call log. Mine is an ANDROID and works well.

T-Mobile is my carrier. I get several caller IDs a day that T-Mobile displays "Scam Likely" on the screen. 99% of these are actually scams.
If the sending number has an ID that is not in my contact list, I wait for it to stop ringing and then check my voice messages. If “No longer in service” comes up or if there is spam , I block and delete the number.

Our landline had a pretty ancient in-home answering machine. I figured out that robo calls usually ring a max of 4 times. I set the answer machine for 6 rings, but even if no message was left, the machine always identified them put them into the call log. That means that we had to listen to all logs even if no message was left.

Lucky for us, the old machine bit the dust and was replaced. More modern and a lot better. Again, I set it up for 6 rings. If an unrecognized call comes in, we let it ring up to 5 times If no message is left, the machine leaves no indication of a call. This simple feature has drastically reduced the number of times we need to check messages.

By the way, many robo calls listen for one, sometimes two HELLO's before switching over to a person or a recording. If we do pick up the phone, we answer with something like "Good afternoon. This is Name." If the line is quiet, or we hear a quiet beep, or cubicle farm noise, we hang up immediately.

I think frustration comes from answering the phone too much in the first place. I've had caller ID for about 20 years and only answer when I actually know the caller . . . and sometimes not even then funny

I would say about 5% of the calls we receive are answered.

I have Verizon and an Android phone from Samsung. It now displays "Potential Spam" when a spam call comes in. I don't answer those and they often leave a message but it's usually about 13 seconds long. <<DELETE>>

Love the "Potential Spam" warning GFC = my at&t does not do that.

One of my favorites is the almost daily calls that i get from a number that is almost the same as my cell number.

I basically only only answer calls that from numbers that are programmed into my phone.

That helps screen out most scam calls but have almost missed a couple calls that i needed to get.

We have a 3 tiered approach to our dinasaur landline.

1) Pay an extra $5/mo for the telco (Frontier) to block unlisted and caller ID of 'unknown'
2) When we decide to answer, dont answer with hello. We answer with "Good morning/afternoon/evening, you have reached the (lastname) residence."
3) Our Panasonic cordless phone system has a block button we can add a number to its blocking feature.

Even with all that 60% of the calls we get are still sales, marketing, survey, solicitations...

I purchased a car about 7 years ago, gave my cell phone number to the salesperson, been getting spam calls for auto warranties ever since. I have asked them several times to put me on their do not call list, but to no avail. This year I started getting the IRS calls, Soc Sec calls, and Ashely the loan girl. I ended up getting the "Robo Killer" app since I have AT&T which does not flag scam calls. This app has been very effective so far, and has only blocked one call that I know of that it shouldn't.

My only concern with blocking numbers is that they're all fake anyway. They spoof numbers, and so I could end up blocking a number I want to hear from.

All in all, super frustrating.

The problem we face is that the same two or three SPAM calls are coming from random numbers which are almost never used twice. Because they are spoofed, the number that shows up on the caller ID is bogus and blocking it does absolutely no good. I have resisted paying for a service like Nomorobo on my cell phone, though the free version seems to work quite well on our home phone.

Not only is there the annoyance of the phone ringing, but they all leave a message, of which there are only a couple of. I now recognize them within the first word or two and immediately delete, but it is an interruption and waste of time.

If anyone has a solution to recommend, I am certainly interested.

There USED to be an answering device for land lines, I haven't been able to find it lately, but it was very simple in how it worked, and I don't know why the cell companies don't do this:
-Your phone rings on the CALLERS side, but not YOUR phone...
-Caller gets this message: "if you are a human, press 9"
-If the caller presses 9, THEN your phone rings and displays Caller ID normally...
-If a few seconds goes by or it detects voice instead of "9" or detects a wrong number pressed, it says 'goodbye', hangs up, and blacklists that phone number....

Wouldn't work on actual a-hole humans, but would work great for robocalls. I'm sure robo's could be programmed to spit out a "1" touch tone, but that's why you'd use a 9 or some other number...

Very simple, but I can't find any such device anywhere.

There's apps like 'nomorobo', but they, as far as I know, rely only on a 'huge database' of scammer phone numbers. But that's not much help when the robo spoofs a random phone number every time it calls.

So here’s another problem this creates-

We own a service based business. We are constantly on the phone setting, confirming, etc.

Because no one wants to answer the dam phone, our conversations end like this. “Ok Mrs Jones, I have you down for Tuesday between 10-11 AM. We will call you when we are on the way. If you do not answer we will not leave a voice mail and we will not come.”

Hello, is Kevin there? That the latest opening line I get. When I say you have the wrong number, they begin to rattle on with whatever they are pitching. So now when they call and say “Is Kevin there”, I say hold on, let me get him... sit for 5 minutes

Back in the day when I had a landline phone I had it listed in the phone book under a different last name and no address listed.

When a scammer would call and ask for "Mr. Jones" I knew it was someone who didn't know me. My response was always "No, he's still in prison. I'm just here keeping his old lady warm for a few more years until he gets out."

That was usually followed by a click from their end of the connection.

If you have an iPhone running iOS 13.1.2 you can set it to send spam calls to your voicemail without even ringing. So for it has worked well for me.
Go into Setting>Phone scroll down to Silence Unknown Calls

I then review my voicemails as needed. So far very few of the calls sent to voicemail have been of any consequence.
