In a whirlwind move, I found a darn good deal on an Alaskan cruise last night, and we booked today. We will be at sea July 14-21. Can't believe I jumped so hard on that, I am generallly quite the planner. I did stay up most of the night researching...

Anyway, we fly into Seattle a couple days in advance but have to be in Vancouver to board the cruise. Rental car is out, that was my initial thought, but wow the expense. I hear there's an Amtrak between the two, but this close it's already getting tight on available tickets, some are sold out.

As I'm looking a little, I think maybe I could take public transit from the airport into Seattle, drop luggage at Amtrak so we have the day to explore, and then take the train to Vancouver, no rental needed at all. How does this sound, especially to someone who might be localish and familiar with the area....

Lots to do!

CB, your thoughts of taking the light rail ("The Link") from the airport to the Amtrak station is a good one. It's a fair hike from the arrival gates to the point where you get on The Link so make sure your suitcases have wheels, and you're wearing comfortable shoes. We've taken The Link a few times and it's an easy trip.

The Amtrak station in Seattle is on the south end of the downtown business district, almost adjacent (but up a steep hill) from the Seahawks stadium.

As to what to see and do in Seattle to kill a day, I'd suggest you grab a cab and head for Pike Place Market. It's a short distance from The Link station so the cab fare won't kill you. There are a bazillion little shops and street vendors to see and the Market is definitely worth seeing.

From there you can walk down the steps to the waterfront. You'll be near the south end of the waterfront strip and IMHO a must stop is Ivar's Restaurant, a place to get good seafood and chowder. Also down there is the ferry terminal where the Alaska State Ferries come and go on a frequent basis.

That pretty much will eat up most of your day and all of your energy, then you can grab a cab back to the Amtrak station for your ride north.

Have fun, and if you have any specific questions, fire away.

This is great, kinda what I was thinking but much more concrete. Go figure, you've been there a time or two.

Minor adjustment, my in-laws are adding in, so we will rent a car at the airport to get to our hotel and then into downtown. I'll return the car there and return to plan A. I don't think they're up for the walking and hauling luggage, so I think that's my best bet. I think we'll still stay out by the airport as our flight arrives at 9pm.
