The other day our 1st great-grandson had his 2nd birthday party, which ended up at our house due to crappy weather. Pretty much a madhouse family-reunion style thing, about 30 people here, mostly 'dads' family that we've never met. Lots of relatives of all ages. At least 20 of them were teens/young adults, who we couldn't get to put down their smart phones long enough to eat the mountain of food that was there. After everyone ate, everyone retired to the nearest place to sit and got back on the smartphones...

After some dirty dish cleanup, Orion got put in a high chair next to his cake, everyone gets up and joins in, we all sing Happy Birthday, mom & dad keep trying to get Orion to blow out the candles instead of grabbing them, cake got smeared around, everyone's laughing...

but from the moment Orion got planted in his chair, I looked around and I couldn't find a single person in the room holding a smart phone to take pictures or video-- except my wife... ???

I seriously don't get it... idn

Remember there is a camera in that phone. (:-)

Sadly the phone thing is more the norm today. People have no idea there is a whole world going on all around them,

We have a rule in our home--no TV, no smartphones, no electronic devices on or in use during meals. That includes meals in restaurants.

Same rules at our house. Try to promote as many activities as possible to eliminate screen time. Yet another reason while we love boating time.

We don't have internet at home, we can get limited service if we use our neighbors service but it is not very strong because of the distance.

We also have a no-phone rule in our house. I also try - despite it being my job to NOT ignore the phone - not to pay any attention to it regardless of what is happening, when I am conducting a business social event. I grew up in a house with 1 TV, and it was nearly never on during dinner. CJSA did not grow up in a house like that, so today, the TV may be on and she may be watching, but me and the crew are at the table regardless. I decided a long time ago that was not the hill I wanted to die on.

I guess we are different, in some respects. We have internet in the home as I work from home. I just switched again as our old service was super slow in the new house.

That being said, tech is limited for the kids. TV, video games, etc. We also don't have cable. OTA or streaming for TV. Too much tech makes for unruly kids. We moved to the country and the kids can go out and play in the dirt.

One night a week we can watch a movie during dinner. Otherwise it is off during dinner. No phones at the dinner table (wife course corrects me on that one). Not allowed to have TV on and internet use at same time. 1 piece of tech at a time.

I grew up with the TV on all the time, including at dinner. Not so in my house. I would be fine if we didn't have any TVs as I don't watch it?
