Hello all. I'm currently in the process of buying a 2010 Cobalt 276 with 353 hours on a Volvo 8.1Gi engine. The boat broker says this engine has 420 hp, yet my research says the Volvo 8.1 Gi puts out 375hp. It is the GXi engine that puts out 420 hp. My survey is tomorrow. Does anyone have any thoughts in what the price difference is between a 375hp and 420hp motor should be? I feel there is some false advertising here. Also, thank you for your thoughts in advance. Looking forward to being a member of this forum.

Welcome to the forum . . . d

Is the boat the one in Annapolis, MD?

The add states 8.1 Gi, but incorrectly states the HP rating as 420 hp. The pictures confirm the 8.1 Gi . . .

So, not much of a case for false advertising. The disclaimers on the Ad listing probably covers any incorrectly stated information. I also find information to say that the Gi is 375 hp and the GXi is 420 hp. Not a big difference either way.

As to the pricing difference . . . if you go onto NADA and price the boat with the lower rated engine, it wants to take off $1,780 of the 'estimated' market value ( or about 2.5%). The question you will need to consider is if the asking price reflects the Gi or the GXi. At a 2.5% difference, it is probably negligible.

Having owned a Chaparral 260ssi for 5 year with the 375hp Gi motor, I can tell you that in a boat that big, the extra HP of the 420 would maybe get you on plane a second faster, and maybe 2 or 3 more mph on the top end, and would likely use more gas doing so smile The 375 was plenty for our boat even with 14 souls on board.

In short, use the mislabeled HP as a bargaining chip wink

I agree with the others, the 8.1 Gi is rated 375 HP.

Good luck on the new boat.

Spot on!

The extra 45 HP; assuming: both HP numbers are accurate, the boats are identical, and the boats are propped correctly, would yield 5.8% more top speed. I'd bet the 375 HP number is slightly low and the 420HP is slightly high, thus the difference is probably less than 5.8%. Either motor would be great in that boat. Cobalts are not built to a price point and they do not have a reputation for under-powering boats.

On the Chaparral site when building your own boat it is a $13,000 dollar jump from 380 hp to 430 hp with Volvo power.

It's a pricey jump on a new build or repower. Not surprised the resale value doesn't hold up.

Options in cars and boats usually have price points designed to give the dealer negotiating room, make a customer happy to get such a good deal, etc.

When I was investigating a used boat purchase into 2012, almost all the 19 and 22-footer boats had 5.0 Liter power plants. Since I was going to operate at 5000 foot elevation, I had strong suspicions that the 5.7 MPI, catalytic converter power plant would make a significant difference. Even so, I still opted to go one step lower in propeller pitch and stainless compared to the aluminum prop that came with the boat.

Have a great day of boating

Yes, interesting that a $10-13K price difference in the engine for a new boat translates to only a $1-2K difference once it is a used boat. A 'noise level' difference on many used boats, but a bigger/more powerful engine is certainly a selling point.
