I just noticed that there is a pool of liquid directly beneath the drain plug on my boat. The fluid is clear, odorless, and has a viscosity that seems thinner than motor oil. Would you suspect this to be hydraulic fluid from the stern drive tilt or the trim tabs? Could it be lube from the stern drive (VP DP)? I don't think it is motor oil due to lake of color, but it is possible as some motor oils that are quite clear. Any thoughts?

My guess would be power steering fluid.

Doh, PS fluid didn't even cross my mind! idn Thanks! thumb

I did have a leak in the PS system last summer. Perhaps the is just fluid from the bilge that is slowly draining out?

Due to poor lighting and stuff stored all around the boat, I will probably have to wait until spring to take a close look and see if I can identify the source. But now I will know where to start looking!

Thanks Dave!

What fixed the leak last Summer? If the reservoir was over-filled, and you moved the stern drive sideways manually (either with the wheel or by pushing it directly, it could have over-flowed out the cap.

There's only a few possibilities. Power steering or tilt. Drive fluid stinks and oil will be gold or black. Is the drive down? Was it when you stored it?

The PS leak was caused by a plastic cap somewhere in the system that cracked. This took place close to mid-season last year.

The drive is still in the raised position.

That would seem to indicate the tilt system isn't leaking. That leaves power steering fluid as the only potential clear fluid if it doesn't smell like gear oil. Or baby oil that leaked out of a bottle?
