So I was out in the yard raking leaves out of the garden in the front yard. it's about 40*, zero wind with a heavy overcast sky. While out there I noticed a very familiar pattern. Geese flying. And not just flying but flying in large flocks and going in all directions. We're fortunate to live along the Columbia River and we've noticed larger and larger rafts of geese swimming on the calm water.

Today though I noticed that there were a LOT more geese in the air than we've seen in awhile. In the fall, this area becomes a gathering point for geese from points north. They gather here as it gets colder in areas north of here and stick around here. By the thousands they gather here but now times are changing. Must be they're getting antsy to start heading south.

I don't blame them. In a month we're going to be doing the same thing.

See ya later geese.

Do the geese seem to be on schedule or a little later this year?
I'd been trying to keep up with the leaves before the snow flew, but they took their sweet time dropping from the trees, then we had a big wind come through that brought all the neighbors leaves into my yard.
Snowed Sunday, so all those leaves that decided to stick around until december, are now under the snow.
Decent storm that came later than usual, but dumped enough we are now at over 100% snowpack for the Lake Powell basins, but only the beginning of the season really doesn't mean much yet.
Enjoy the warmth of AZ right after the cold of the annual boat parade.

I haven't paid too much attention to their schedule in past years so I have nothing to judge this year against. I think their schedule is more dependent on the weather than the calendar. In the past week or so there's been a lot of cold air coming down from Canada and that may have frozen some of the lakes north of here. That may be what drives them north. Around here it's been in the 40's until this past few days. Today it almost hit 40*, tomorrow is supposed to be 31*-32*. Somehow they seem to sense the cold and get the heck outa Dodge before it hits in earnest.

Jan 6th we'll be heading south. I'm not really counting the days but I am getting yard work done around here. Our willow tree still has a LOT of leaves. I've been picking them up with the lawn tractor for about a month now and there's that much more yet to fall.

We have a flock of geese at the lake house, they poop on the lawn and docks which make it a pain to walk.

OH, that's where the term "Goose Stepping" comes from.
