Went for a spur of the moment two-day trip on the Maine mid-coast this week. WOW! I'm an idiot for not doing this sooner... It is only an easy 3 hour drive from my house to the nice free launch ramp near Bangor, and the boating was utterly fantastic. Great pics!
Dave's pictures make me think.
New Englanders seem to have it all.
We have beautiful lakes and mountains.
We have a scenic coastline.
All 4 seasons.

Great area, I moved to Bangor in the month of January and it sure didn't look like that then. 3 hours is not that long at all to boat on beautiful waters, it takes me that long to go to an inland lake called Raystown and takes me 6.5 hours to get to my lake house.

Wow, 6.5 hours seems like a long drive for a second home. Can you stay for weeks at a time? We are fortunate, boating-location-wise: we can get to Lake Champlain in < 3 hours, The Atlantic Ocean in 25 minutes, Lake Winnipesaukee in 1 hour, Sebago in <2 hours, Lake George and/or Hudson River in 3.5 hours, Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay or Cape Cod in 2.5 hours, and Long Island Sound in 3 hours. We can also got to friend's boats on Pawtuckaway Lake in <5 minutes. If memory serves, we can be at Lake Ontario in 6.5 hours.

Bangor and most mid-coast Maine communities have accomplished a tremendous amount of work to re-invent themselves since the major industries that sustained them have faded away. I recall driving around in that area in the 80s and much of it was pretty depressed. The area seems to be thriving now. There is a massive amount of wealth up there. I think the major industries went from timber and fishing, to tourism (and art galleries :-) )

It was only a two day trip. I worked the Tuesday and Friday at each end of it.

Dave, those are some great photos. I've only been to New England once and what I saw of it was absolutely gorgeous. I'd take most any of those little cottages by the bay if you were offering it.

Thanks for taking us along on your boat trip.
