Anyone ever used CopyCat Upholstery in Florida? I need to have 6 of my seat cushions redone, and the local guys want $1800 - $2000. That includes taking the old vinyl off and re-installing the new vinyl. I've already removed the cushions from the boat.

CopyCat gave me a quote of $715. All I need to do is remove the vinyl, mail them the old ones and they mails me the new ones. I install over the old plywood and padding. It seems worth it for over $1000 in savings.

That seems really pricey to me.

What is the cost to ship to FL?

Almost $300 a cushion locally seems very high

Shipping should be under $50.

Bob:
Are you sure you got quotes based on the exactly the same material and service? Maybe the local guys quoted based on the boat coming in, removal of the cushions, strip and replace foam, make and install new upholstery, re-install cushions. Also, be sure your quote includes fabric specifications (brand, weight, "marine", etc.) for quality marine vinyl fabric.

I sent all the covers (6) to them in mid February. I just heard back from them Monday that they're done, and they're in the mail. I'll let you know how they look.

Covers are back and they look pretty darn good. I haven't tried fitting them back on the wood and old foam yet. The old foam is in good shape - no disintegration at all. However, there are some dark patches that look like old mold or mildew stains. The foam is completely dry at this point, having been airing out without the vinyl on for the last 2-3 months.

Originally, there was a thin sheet of plastic installed between the vinyl and the foam. I'm going to replace that with new plastic.

Question: Should I treat the existing foam with any kind of mold/mildew killer or protectant, or will that break down the foam?

Our v-berth cushions got wet when a hatch leaked and were moldy when we next got to the boat. I put them on a tarp and saturated them with a bleach and water mix, then rinsed thoroughly. They no longer smell like mold and are OK to sleep on, but we are going to replace them in a year or two anyway. because they are old and too thin/soft. The bleach did not appear to damage the foam as far as I can tell.

If you do treat the foam, be aware that killing the mold without washing it away just leaves food for new mold. Also, oxidants like bleach can accelerate rust on nearby metal if you don't fully remove it.

Yes, I was very pleased with the results. The first cover I put back on took me a couple of tries but by the 6th one, I was really good at it.

I'm restoring/improving my 18' baretta I know its not worth much but it was free. All the wood backed upholstery was rotten. I removed it and am making my own panels. I want to coat all the panels I make with truck bed liner then send it out for upholstery then just buy new back to back seats. If what im working with is factory design all I can say about the design is WTF the speakers were mounted in the motor panels, I'm moving them to the side panels. are 80's boats poorly thought out or was this an example of cheap factory options
