Seems you read about it in the news all the time and the more impoverished the area the higher the opoid use.

By no means am I an expert on this topic but it is something that has touched some friends.

A couple that is close to me (not a member of this board) have had troubles. The wife in a member of one of the tribes and is included on the Dawes Roll. As such she receive health care at an tribal clinic if she so desires.

She was having some pain issues with her back. I have no first hand experience but I have been told by more than a couple of folks that the physicians and staff at the NAC's tend to be of a lesser quality.

Anyway she has been given several RX's for Oxy and Hydro Codine, with the codine % of the tablet being towards the maximum. My buddy tells me his wife became addicted to the point she could hardly function. He went to each of the prescribing physicians and explained the situation and that they not prescribe the meds so freely. Most physician agreed but a couple pretty much refused his request.

Today I had some minor surgery done to the exterior of my throat, but it did require general anaesthesia since a scream like a little girl when I see a scalpel. When I was released from the hospital I as given an Rx for 40 tablets of 7.7/325 Hydrocodine. I have an average tolerance for pain and find the most OTC meds do just fine for me. I have been given enough pills to last me nearly 7 days at the max dosage. At no time was I asked if there would be an issue with me for that strong a pain reliever. There isn't but it is examples like this that make me understand why we have issues with this.

I know there is a heck of a lot more to the problem than this but my own mother is frequently given large Rx's for this med in the higher dosage of 10/500. Hundreds of pills. She has had them stolen from her house by service people fixing her sinks and stuff. They don't take all of them but the take maybe 30% at a whack. Her husbands family members have also helped themselves.

Just venting I suppose.

The pain meds have worn off now and I am in no real discomfort. I have to sleep upright tonight so I will take two at bedtime so I can sleep in the recliner and not toss and turn. I need to rent a cat for the night to keep my lap occupied.

Thanks for the ear....

Take care...

Amen to kdl's comments. Get better soon PH.

There was an article in yesterday's Phoenix newspaper that there have been 790 deaths in AZ in 2016, a 16% increase from 2015, and it's going to be higher for 2017 and is already on a higher pace for 2018. That's over 2 a day in 2016, and that's only one state, and that state ranks 15th in size by population.

Those numbers are staggering and there is no end in sight to the increase. As a nation we have a horrific drug problem and no end in sight to that problem.

Very scary stuff. Glad you are on the mend.

You would think they would promote patients to take as little as possible but it seems they tend to promote taking the most.

Thank all of you for the wishes for my health. Sincerely appreciate those thoughts.
Surgeon made a small incision and had me in recovery in less than an hour.
Surgery started at 8:30 am.....it is now 8:00 pm so I imagine all meds have worn off.

There is not any real discomfort except for a raw throat where the put the tube to assist in my breathing. (I least I hope that's the reason)

And I'm sitting on a cache of drugs that would bring on average $7.00 a pill or 280 dollars for what I have.

When I cleaned out my mothers meds some time back I took them all to the local police station where they have a depository for things like that. I took all the labels off the bottles but did not mix them all together. My understanding is that most of the stuff is incinerated.

Our buddies. The drug companies. The Feds were finally able to reign in the tobacco cartel, but it seems like the drug outfits may be even tougher.

So glad you're doing well and are so aware of the dangers of pain meds.
So many people are afraid of any pain at all and expect the recovery from surgery to be pain free, with no discomfort at all.
Sorry folks, that's not the way the body works.
I came to an amazing conclusion after coming out of anesthesia extremely nauseous for the third time after surgery and realized I have a very low tolerance to narcotics.
Informed the Dr of this prior to a colonoscopy and he said we'll do this one without Demerol (sp?) . In my previous one I was in the recovery room for over an Hour and a Half and had to be wheelchaired out to my car, but without demerol I awoke as the Dr was leaving the procedure room, and was dressed and ready to walk out of the recovery room in less than half an hour.
I LOVE beer, but that low tolerance to narcotics carries over to me only having 1 or two, where I can enjoy the flavor but not deal with the after-effects.

Beer makes you feel the way
You should feel without beer.

I had a knee scoped a few years back. At the end of the operation, they injected a local pain killer directly in the knee, and then sent me home the same day with a bottle of pain killers (no idea what varietal) with instructions to take them ahead of time and not to wait for the local to wear off. I knew from a prior knee operation that pain meds have side affects, so I never took the pain killers. Turns out, I didn't need them. I was pleasantly surprised to find only very modest pain. Had I taken the pain killers, I probably would have assumed there would have been pain if not for the meds.

However, I did experience some pain a few days later while being tortured by terrorists from a radical group called "physical therapy". Ouch. ouch

PH - Wishing you a speedy and full recovery.

Agree with this! I have never taken even half of the pain meds prescribed from a procedure. I like to take them the first day to just knock me out so I can sleep as much as possible. After a day or 2 at the most it's usually just enough pain to remind me to be careful of it.

Interesting comparison to the Tobacco Cartel....makes you think.

A friend of mine that is a PA and is very familiar with the Opoid issues says that one of the problems is a method of measuring the effectiveness of medical professionals when it comes to "Pain Management" criteria.
The drug manufactures touted the hydro and oxy codine drugs and having very little risk for abuse. Professional were encouraged to over proscribe them so that the "PM" ratings would be at the max.

The Native American health clinics in Oklahoma are somewhat notorious for a free wheeling Rx delivery system. That's what caused my friend and his wife so much grief.

...and a new chapter in Opoid problems...

My stepfather went into the hospital with groin pains....the ER doc basically said he had an issue with his foreskin and manipulated it and sent him home with a new Rx for Oxy-codine.....
The next night he is in a lot of lower back pain so he takes a couple of the pills and then wanders around the house in a comatose state, Mom finally calls an ambulance for him since she thinks he has had a stroke....

They take him back to the original hospital and make a further diagnosis about his "problem"......seems he had a pineal implant done years ago and forgot all about it. Then some how triggered it into the "on" setting and could not turn it off.

They take his toy out today......

He keeps insisting we take him to various doctors until one will tell us it is ok for him to continue to do concealed carry around the house.......and he can't figure out a toaster......I'm nearly at my wits end with this stuff.....
