For the 2nd straight year, we rang in the new year on a tour boat on Geneva Lake in WI. The Eastern half of the lake was frozen over, but the West end is deeper and takes much longer to freeze over.

This photo shows the boat waiting to be boarded (the first boat is decorated, but has been winterized). They keep several of these boats in the water all winter (I assume they use bubblers). The temperature was -6F when we boarded. It just boggles my mind that it is possible to operate a boat on a fresh water lake in WI in sub zero weather. The boat went out again today for a New Years Day cruise. I assume it gets put away for the winter tomorrow.

In this photo you can see the steam rising from the water. On the days leading up to NYE, the lake was fogged in from the steam coming off the water.

Hard to believe they go out as cold as it was. Have been on one of those tour boats many years ago & on a much warmer day.

The temps have not been above single digits for a week or two now, and temps overnight dropped to -11F. The temp is currently -9F and the lake is still not frozen on the West end. Here is a pic from the webcam at Gorday's Marina in Fontana:

Will it eventually completely freeze over?

Dock, thanks for sharing the pics and the temps with us. I grew up in MI then lived 4 years in AK so I know how cold those sub-zero temps feel. If there's a nice thing about them it's that you can dress for the low temps and that makes them tolerable.

We've been in the mid-30's this past few days. We had one day last week that hit mid-50's but only stayed long enough to get the snow and ice off the roads.

At this time last year Lake Erie ice cover was 2.9% this year it is 42.2% covered. Total ice cover of all the great lakes was 2.2% last year and 19.7% this year.

At least the lake effect snow will shut down when Lake Erie freezes over. Erie, PA is probably looking forward to that.

I don't have any stats on this, but from my observations, the lake does entirely frozen over each year, but not until late January most years. On a mild winter, it is very possible that it does not totally freeze over.

There was a fatal accident on Feb 15, 2016 when a snow mobile hit open water in the middle of the lake.

Didn't they have a bunch of cars go thru the ice last year at some festival?

Yep 2 or 3 years ago, a bunch of cars were parked on the lake - they were all lined up like in a parking lot. They combined weight overwhelmed the ice, and the ice started to give way. The cars did not "fall through the ice", the ice just kind of sank a bit, and some cars got wet on one end. All were pulled out with a tow truck. On that day, the temps were in the 40s.

I just checked a Gordys Webcam on the lake - the west end of the lake (Fontana) just froze over this morning (it was not frozen a few hours ago, but looks frozen now). Amazing it look this long as it has been super cold for several weeks now.
