Many are experiencing a deep freeze right now, I have bottled water of various sizes stored in my garage that are completely frozen. This gave me the thought of looking at my unused gallon of -50 antifreeze that currently sits on my workbench to see how that is fairing. The gallon of liquid car wash soap that sits next to my antifreeze is also completely frozen however my -50 antifreeze is as fluid as the day I purchased last summer. Stay warm everyone and remember that Daytona 500 is about 5 weeks away.

On the bright side (literally), the days are getting longer. Spring will be here soon.

Heading up to Munising Michigan for some snowmobiling next week so I won't complain about the cold or snow. So far this is looking like a good year for them. The last 2 have been so so at best. Thinking there local economies will be a lot happier if the snow keeps up.

I almost feel guilty saying this, but this morning we flew down to the Phoenix area to get back to some warmer weather. It was about 28* when we left home, about 76* when we landed in Mesa, AZ. Allegiant Air flies direct, no change of planes, no stops, 2:15 minutes and we're here.

We pick up a rental car to get to our condo and will return it tomorrow. Ya gotta love being retired.

Oh, and I checked in with the mechanics that take care of the boat. They know where all the deicer stuff is and will take good care of my baby while I'm gone. I'll be back in late February. In the meanwhile I'm enjoying the nice weather down here.

We came out of church yesterday and I said that it felt warm outside and the others agreed. Started the truck and the temperature gauge read 10* and thought it must be wrong so I checked my phone and it read 11*. Sad when those temperatures feel warm. Supposed to be near 50 on Friday so soon we can bring out the boat.

Actually when I worked outside in construction it wasn't too bad as long as temperatures were at least 10*.

Nothing doing here in Idaho. Been in the 40s most days lately. Going to have to go to Wyoming and Alaska to find some snow. Cody, Wy in a few weeks, Jackson in February, Alaska in March.

We flew into Boston Tuesday to lots and lots of snow on the ground and in the 20's. Yesterday, it got to 57, rain and wind all night, and the snow is gone in most places. Temp held until this morning, and in a few hours it is now 32. Expected in the mid-teens tonight, with a large storm ready to show up with huge deposits of precipitation.

My son told me they were already dropping salt on the roads and sidewalks in preparation for ice, which also has the powers that be concerned about ice flows and blockages, causing flooding.

Overall, not a great report from a California guy.

So, it warmed up and a couple of days ago at 4:30am, I woke to the loud sound of water running at full open. A pipe in the wall of our garage burst. Luckily, it was one I had previously repaired and had insulated with foam. The foam kept the water from cutting through the drywall and raining in the garage like it did the previous time. By 6:30am, I had cut into the drywall and got a new section of copper sweated in and was thinking of going back to bed for a nap.

Then, I noticed a slow drip from above my repair...

It turned out there was a slow leak higher up in the same pipe, but under the bathtub in the efficiency apartment above our garage. Unfortunately, it was in the subfloor in a totally inaccessible location. After thinking about it, I went to Lowe's for some PEX and Sharkbite connectors. Even with the Sharkbites, it was a real chore to cut the pipe and de-burr it. At least if it freezes again, the pipe won't burst.

The leak in the bathroom subfloor was from a fitting that had been soldered poorly, probably due to the location. I have no idea how anyone could have even got in there to solder without removing both drywall and framing.
