I think we are talking about the same company. In San Diego, they are called Discount Tire, but in Los Angeles area and others, the name is America's Tire. Here is a company history link. Note the mention of both names.

My F350 came with Firestone tires that I was happy with, so I replaced them with the same tires. The next time I needed tires, I was no longer towing a heavy trailer, so I went with a more aggressive tread pattern for better traction in snow, but stuck with Firestones. After 20 years and 150K miles, I am now halfway through the third set and quite happy with the life and performance. Four tires mounted and balanced out the door was $760, so I am happy with the cost per mile as well.

These are basically what gas stations used in the 60's-- With this one, the tube in front connected to the arms, that's the moving half of the bead breaker, welded to the leg below is the stationary breaker, it pushes up the tire from the bottom and holds the tire still once you insert the bar for some leverage and push down- pop goes the bead...

--once both beads are broke, place the tire on top, lock it down and use the bar to pry the tire bead over the rim, then walk the bar around the upright pole to get the first half of the tire off the rim, then repeat for the bottom half. Reverse the procedure to re-mount the tire. The HARD part with these is getting the tires to air up. Usually takes a helper. Old tires are usually no problem, you hand-seat the bottom bead, then pull up the tire to get it against the rim while your helper adds air. New tires are pretty stiff and not too forgiving. An 'air belt' helps, it wraps around the middle of the tire, you add air, it gets bigger and squashes inward against the tread which presses the sidewalls outward. Or you can use the starting-fluid-and-a-match method wink In 1975 I was working for Budget Rent-a-car, and I did the snow tire swap on 26 cars with a manual tire changer. It was basically the same as this one except the bead breakers worked with the tire mounted to the changer. Once you get used to the procedure, you can off and on a tire in about 2 minutes. I have one of these changers and the balancer, got 'em for xmas last year, but haven't had a chance to use them yet smile

Some good thoughts put there. Thanks for sharing. GFC, glad you saw that and was able to get it fixed.

Haven't decided what to do yet. I'll give it more thought now. I have studded tires for the winter and the tread is still good. I do like the idea of selling the ones off the suburban and putting the truck tires on the suburban. Kind of a blend.

Not worth it to mount my own as they still need to be balanced and today's balancers can do it multi dimensionally.

This thread jinxed me on my Half ton.
I've been driving the Volvo my son wrecked as my daily driver airport car, with the Half Ton sitting in the garage while I decide how to proceed with her restoration.
Drove it the other day and she felt "squirrely". Sure enough Left Rear tire was low, and I found a nail in the middle of the of the tread area. Since the tires are 11 years old Costco won't fix them any more, and looking close there is some sidewall cracking.
Since I want to change the wheels out with the restoration, I'm now searching for what I want so I can replace the wheels and Tires at the same time.
Thanks for Lighting a fire and making me actually start looking seriously, before I was really ready to. ouch

4 wheel parts has a sale right now for 4 of my tires, mounted and balanced, for $750. They are $100 off, they are paying tax and include mounting and balancing.

Gonna have to make the decision tomorrow.

I went ahead and ordered the tires from 4 wheel parts. I was afraid I would wake up and the deal would be over. I actually ordered 5 as the spare is 10 years old and where I go to I should have a spare that I can trust.

Saved $150-$200 over other places with $100 off, no sales tax and free mounting and balances. Plus, I'll put in for a BFG rebate for $50 that might sweeten the deal.

I'll swap them for the ones on the truck. I think I will then swap the used tires on the Suburban and sell those newer ones. That should get me $300 back or so.

Justi, Since (I'm assuming here) you're going to put some studly wheels and tires on that bad boy in the future, you probably don't want to spend a boat buck or more for tires now.


Why not look around your area for a used tire dealer, or a dealer that might have some "take offs"--tires that were removed from a truck so the owner could jazz it up with new tires and wheels.

I had intended on having a local car customizer fix up the truck, but we're about 60-75 boat bucks apart on what I think I should spend, and what he want's to get it in his shop for at least 6 months. I think his clientele and I live in entirely different worlds.
Since the Volvo is 4wd and meets my needs for an airport car and winter driver, the truck is hiding out in the garage barely driven until I can come up a plan. or a body shop who can fix up some damage and repaint the truck, while I end up figuring out the customization on my own.
I'll probably end up starting a tear down on my own, and not worry about anything else until after she's painted. I've got the diesel or my youngest's truck for any hauling I may need to do.
As to the Wheels I'm kind of partial to this style from tire rack

If I may, I would like to say that the one on the far right will keep its curb appeal for years. Maybe not so for the one of the far left. Definitely not for the center ones.

Makes NO financial sense to rebuild this truck, but I have a deep love of it as it was my pilot training graduation present to myself.
Low tech with no remote door locks,or remote mirrors. It's got a cassette player with no bluetooth, and velour seats that still look new 26 years later. I like how it drives better than the newer (not new as it's now 13 years old) diesel, but it can't hold a candle to the diesel for towing power or room for a long drive.

Sounds like a great project. Seeing what you did with the Volvo I'm sure it will come out great. Have contemplated doing something with my 2002 Dodge ram daily driver but am leaning more towards letting it go at this point.
