If you use Kidde fire extinguishers at home, the office, on your boat, or elsewhere, check them as soon as possible. The extinguishers can fail to operate in case of emergency, or break with enough force to injure. There have been 400 reported injuries and one fatality.

Thanks for posting GFC. That is certainly a wide time window. I had heard it on the radio, but didn't do any more. Since you've already done the homework, you have saved us a lot of time. Now, to check what I have. So far, all I have found are metal handled units. Need to find the rest.

Had three separate ones, one of which used to be in the boat, but had expired so I bought new ones and put the old one in the garage as a back up.
ANother one was under the back seat of my truck.
. Thanks for the heads up

We're down in AZ right now so I won't be able to check which ones I have until we get back. That definitely will be a high priority item.

I bought new fire extinguishers for the boat last summer. The ones for the V-berth and cabin are both industrial quality with metal handles, but the one in the cockpit and the one on the flybridge were covered by the recall and Kidde is telling me that the replacements will arrive in about three weeks.

On a related note, the larger fire extinguisher in the cabin is a First Alert that I bought at Costco. I noticed this weekend that it has not held a charge and First Alert is replacing it for free.

It is nice to see that both companies are taking a responsible stand when their products are showing issues! I am especially happy that I did not have to go through any trouble to get the replacements, since they could have make it difficult to provide all the information necessary to prove ownership.

I purchased a Simplex-Grinnel brand industrial CO2 bottle from a professional supply house some time back. They offer free refills if it is ever discharged as long as you have the receipt. I put the receipt in a baggie taped to the bottom of the bottle.

Many of the receipt tapes are produced by thermal printers, and fade out over time and temperature. When i want to keep a receipt, I photocopy it and keep it with the original. Some companies have registration capability on their websites. I have found this to be a good practice, especially with items which may get safety recalls.
