Have a little tire dilemma. Truck and suburban use same tire. They both us BFG AT TA KO 10 ply tires.

Truck tires are 3 years old and have another year in them. Suburban tires are 6 years old and barely any wear. Just starting to get some sidewall cracks.

I cant just swap them as truck rims have a different inside hub diameter or I would have done that.

It'll cost me $120 to swap tires onto other rims.

So, do I swap the tires or just let it ride knowing that age will ruin the suburban tires before wear.

My truck gets used on hunting trails and for towing so I don't really want to put it in jeopardy. But I hate wasting resources.

I'll be honest about the tires on my half ton being over 11 years old now. Michelin LTX-ATs with about 65000 miles, and lots of tread left.
Costco told me they can't rotate them anymore due to age, but I'm not seeing any evidence of sidewall problems and no abnormal ride issues..
Should I replace them, to be honest yes. Will I? most likely not SInce I'm still planning on some restoration/modification and wheels will be part of the update. Can't see buying new tires before I find out what will be on the truck when done.

Given that information, I'd leave the tires on the Suburban alone and let them age out in another couple of years. Assuming the tread is good enough to get you through this winter, wear out the tires on the truck and replace them next year before the hunting/snow season.

Justification mentions Michelin tires. I feel the same way about them, but not many other brands. Actually, I haven't had any experience with any other brand except Goodyear trailer tires and Goodyear tires for the Tahoe. Goodyears seem to last a relatively short time due to cracking or just fast wear out. Our 2002 Tahoe has the original spare, and America's Tire will not even inflate it anymore because it is older than 10 years. Liability issues, I guess. i have looked at it, and there seems to be no cracking, probably because it hasn't seen the sun its entire lifetime.

My last set of Yokohama on my work truck were so split at 5 year old I was nervous to driving to the tire store. Have always been to cheap to pay for Michelins. My wifes Cadillac SRX came with Michelins new & they were completely wore out @ 34K. Have never had BF Goodrich but it seems that everywhere recommends replacement @ 5 years for age. Guessing you don't drive the Suburban that much so the change could work but then you could end up having to replace tires on both.

A set of new tires for your truck is probably close to $1k so $120 is 1/10th the cost. I would go this route based on the information you shared.

I also would pony up the $120.

I've had Goodyear, Firestone, BFG, Bridgestone, Michelin and Yokohama.

Goodyear: I don't recall the models at this point but my '01 Wrangler had a set that came from factory. They were OK tires, but I lifted the Jeep and put on a set of 33" BFG MTs. The second set of Goodyears I owned came on my '04 Nissan Titan. They were shot and I replaced them at about 38k with a set of Michelins.

Firestone: Had a set on a '03 Saturn VUE AWD. Two of those blew out for no apparent reason within the 2 or so years I had that vehicle. Replaced both with the same (warranty).

BFG: Had one set of these on my Jeep. The M/Ts were good tires, but at 19k, they were getting pretty worn, even with regular rotation. I traded the Jeep for the Nissan Titan.

Michelin: The Michelins I put on my Titan had better grip, were quieter, and improved my gas consumption versus the Goodyears they replaced. There was plenty of tread left on them after about 55,000 miles, with regular rotation of all 5 tires. These tires were on the truck when I wrecked it in December 2011.

Bridgestone: CJSA's '08 Sequoia came with a set of Dueler H/Ts. The first set was good for about 60k. Replaced with the same tires, took us all the way to 93,000 when I sold that truck and replaced with a '17 Toyota 4Runner. I have a similar set of Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts on the '16 Sequoia I am driving now.

Yokohama: Got about 7,000 miles on the set that came on CJSA's T4R. So far, no complaints.

After the experience with the Titan, I always look first at Michelins when shopping for tires. Economics led me to the Bridgestones and factory choice, the Yokos.

My suggestion would be to get new tires now for your truck and move current truck tires to Suburban. I would not risk being off road on trails or towing on 6 yr old tires whose sidewalls are starting to crack. Your 07 may have bigger wheels, but my 2000 Chevy 2500 has the stock 16 inch wheels. I bought new tires at Firestone last year for about $450.

You can probably sell the Suburban tires on Craigslist and recoup part of your cost.

James, I guess I owe you a hearty THANKS. This thread prompted me to head to my local Discount Tire store to have the tires on my Exploder rotated. While there, the store manager told me there was a problem with one of my tires and showed me this:

In case you can't see it well, that's a definite tread separation including a rupture of the steel belts. I asked the manager what was left beneath what we could see and he said there was a layer of rubber, another layer of steel belts and then the inner layer of the tire.

I'd hate to think what could have happened if that had blown out on the highway. It was on the front and could have made a helluva fun ride for a few seconds!

I am researching tires for my 3/4 ton truck as the Michelin MS2 are dry rotted and tread is getting to minimums but first I am getting new ball joints replaced by a family member during Christmas.

They're Goodyear, and they're about 3 years old.

I replaced the original equipment Firestones when they were recalled many years ago. Mine were almost at the tread wear indicators when I did it and I was given a freebie set of tires.

I'm not one who pays a lot of attention to tires. They're round, black, and don't thump when I go down the road. That's good enough for me. Or at least it was before this happened. Now I'll get them rotated on all cars annually.

GFC if those tires are only 3 years old there should be some warranty for that I'd hope.

There was. I didn't ask him what percentage there was remaining but it only cost me $43 for the new tire.

I think that's possibly one benefit of doing all your business with one company. Discount Tire has sold me all of my tires for about the past 10-12 years, maybe even longer than that. When they pull me up in their computer it shows the records of my purchases in WA and AZ. I don't know if that makes any difference with them, but it I were in business and saw that a customer standing in front of me and the computer showed he was a long standing customer, you'd bet I'd be making sure he never found as reason to leave and take his business elsewhere.

Unfortunately, except for lip service ("We appreciate that you've been a customer for XX years"), DirectTV doesn't seem to care. Over the last month or so I've spend about 3-4 hours on the phone with their No-Service Customer Service Dept trying to iron out the mess they created when one of their employees lied to me. That led to another lie I was told several months ago. They always state that their conversations may be recorded for training, but when I suggested they go back and listen to the recording from a few days earlier they hemmed and hawed around but never would admit that they really didn't record conversations.

In So Cal, the company is America's Tire. Like you, I have bought all my tires there since the late '80s. Most of the time, the sales guy makes a comment about how long I have been a customer. I believe I have had some good experiences because of it.

GFC:
Do you buy the certificates with your tires? Their deal is that you pay an extra amount, about 10%, and that tire is guaranteed for life for replacement, no matter what the treadwear is. It also includes repairable flat repair and rotating and re-balance every 5000 miles. They even send me an email message when this service is due. I just make an appointment and out of there in about 1/2 hour.

I have found the certificates have more than paid for themselves multiple times. Our VW Passat has some of the most expensive tires I have ever bought. They are low profile 18" tires from Michelin. Each one is about $240. The Passat, for example has had four unrepairable punctures in sidewalls. Without the certificates, new tires would have to be purchased. Because of the certificates that were purchased, the tires cost me nothing to replace, except new certificates on the new tires.

Another example was with the Subaru. We had a high speed blowout on the freeway one afternoon on tires that I was planning to replace because the tread was very close to the wear markers. Again, new tire at no cost. Without the certs, I would have had to pay for the tire.

I'm not aware of a similar program with DIscount Tire. I used to have a friend that managed the Perfection Tire store near our home. He and I played softball together for quite a few years and he was the reason I always bought tires at Perfection. He retired so I started shopping around to see what store carried what tires.

I ended up at Discount Tire and have been very happy with them. Their prices are very competitive, they carry several brands that I can pick from and their service is very good.

Best part about Discount tires is they pro-rate their tires. If you have a blow out on a tire you bought from them & the tread is @ 50% you pay for that percentage.

Always found them to be very helpful, friendly & quick. Best part we have one about 2 miles from the house.

You do have to keep an eye on ebay. Discount tire online runs some really great deals & free shipping too.

Thats how i got my boat trailer tires - they were way cheaper then you could purchase in the store with the promotion they were running.
