Well, for the past 4 months, recovery has been the main thing in life. Now, it's hunting season. One of my goals when I woke up in the hospital was to get out and hunt this fall. I drew a good deer tag and 2 antelope tags for Wyoming. In September, my son said he wanted to hunt so that added another opportunity. Of course we had to get him through hunter's safety which he completed a few weeks back.

In September I was able to get out and do some dove hunting. Not great results, but fun to do.

Last week I went to Wyoming to hunt antelope for the first time. Those things are tough because they have great eyesight, can see almost 360 degrees, good smell, good hearing and there are often no places to hide to sneak up on them. They also live on the plains where it is windy. The first 2 days I had several opportunities but couldn't connect. Finally on day 3 I connected at 375 yards to fill my first tag. On the way back out of the hunt area, we were able to get a second one fillingy second tag. Ate the backstraps last night and working on breaking them down.

Tomorrow, I am supposed to take our son deer hunting. We have to get to the range tonight and see how he does. If he is challenged, we'll postpone.

In November I am back out for deer for my tag. Once that is done, I'll be back out for quail, rabbits, partridge etc.

Hopefully I'll have more pics to ad as will others on the board.

James, good job on getting your son involved in the hunt. Spending time with our kids is soooo important. Good luck with the rest of the hunting season and with the recovery. YOU DA MAN!

Very nice. Great to see that your out enjoying your time again and recovering from your ordeal.
I was able to get out and took a shot with a crossbow but a small branch deflected my bolt frown. I also made it out duck hunting with my son and his buddy. We got a goose and a mallard.

Here's our boat blind, it worked well

That's a heck of a blind.

Got son to range, but he wasn't accurate enough to go for deer. Going again this week and if he does well, we'll go out this week. My deer trip got pushed back to mid November so now I can hunt elk in early November.

Buying a new freezer as well. Thinkjjng positive as our current one is full.

Been a busy month with hunting. My deer hunt got pushed back to accommodate a buddy coming with me. That meant I had time for elk so I went for 3 days in early November. Hiked for 3 days, 6.5 miles, 5.5 miles and then 2 on the 3rd day. Saw lots of sign, but only 1 bull elk.

My buddy got a new job and couldnt go on this trip. That led to some discussion in the household as i would be going on a hunt by myself. Wife's a little protective of me and I almost didn't go.  I was supposed to go on a flight to scout the area, but some things got in the way. I ended up heading out Wednesday night. It rained all the way there and all night.

Thursday I drove about 100 miles of dirt roads to scout the area and located a few spots I wanted to explore more. Only saw 3 deer. Probably saw 1 buck hiding in the brush but didn't realize it at the time.

Rained and snowed last night. Got up a little late and drove the 45 minutes to the spot I wanted to try. On my way up the hill I glassed the draws I  located a buck and doe and stalked on them. Got winded or seen and they took off. Back to the truck and continued up the hill, glassing the draws as I went up. Located some does so I drove past and out of site. Hiked over to a glassing point and then on the way to the next one I realized I forgot my rifle back at the truck. Grr.   Hiked back up and then went back to my path. Saw the does again so I diverted my path around the side to stay hidden.

Walked and crawled over the next hill until I saw them. It took a while, but I located 4 does and then the buck. After I spotted the buck I realized I saw a hidden buck the day before. He was bedded while two does were bedded and two ate. I layed in the snow for about an hour watching the buck. Then a doe got up, then the other. A few minutes later the buck got up. He was moving out. Darn it. He paused for a second and I squeezed of a shot. He went down and the does took off. Went down where he was and started the process of quartering him out.

Only my second buck, but quite a bit bigger than last year's. 4 points on each side plus brow tines. Trying to decide what to do with the skull and antlers.

Took 3 trips to get him out. [Linked Image]

Decided to do an Euro mount of the buck. First time I have ever attempted. Came out pretty good after following some directions on the interwebz.

Boiling the skull after skinning it out.

Done boiling, but still needs to be whitened.

Whitened 1 time.

The clerk at Sally's Beauty knew exactly what I was doing when I walked in with my bald head and asked for stuff to bleach hair. It was kind of funny.

At first I thought there would be no place for that in my house, but on second thought I think I have a great spot for it.
If your admiral gets too upset, send it to me..... and if you have any spare elk roasts I'll take those off your hands too.
Nice work.

My wife's second cousins are avid hunters with emphasis on avid. The family consists of mom, dad, and two boys. The boys are now married with children of their own. The house is filled with many mounts including deer, birds, foxes, and even a bear rug in the guest room. The fox and birds are full mounts. Under each mount is the weapon that was used in the shoot. The wife/ mother was joking if she would be mounted when she passes and if there would be a weapon placed under her. I didn't grow up hunting however my oldest has taken a liking to it. We are going to visit these cousins over Christmas and may have the opportunity to do some target shooting in their front yard.
