Volvo Penta duo prop 2006 killed when I was on plane for a few minutes. It started up again quick and easy was heading in when it die a second time and would not restart . I got a tow . Now where do I start to look fuel was 3/4 full just treated for winter. Last work was bennett trim tab kit and a swimplatform added . So I went out to run the fuel system and mix in the treatment from starbright called starttron Enzyme Fuel treatment. I have used it for years with no problems. Now I don't know where to start to look for the problems

Sorry to hear that you are having engine problems. Just curious, what lake were you on when this happend?

Carb or EFI?

Was it running fine and then quit suddenly, or was there sputtering and/or poor performance before it died?

Being 2006 guessing it is fuel injected & that makes it highly likely it is a fuel pump issue being a volvo.

Start simple stuff.

Questions first. TBI or MPI? When did you last add gas?

Question is, did you lose fuel or spark.

Fuel filter is an easy place to start. As is checking to see if the kill switch is still in place though I doubt that is the issue.

Were you in rough seas?

Kill switch was my first thing I checked while out on water . Gas was 3weeks old . I did just find the alternator plug was disconnected not sure if that would kill the motor when I went to restart it it turned over fine

Turned over, started and Continued to Run?
or just turned over and didn't start?

Hopefully the former, and a quick inexpensive learning fix.

intermittent problems are usually electrical in nature. Sometimes the wires make contact and sometimes they don't. Could be a broken under insulation or at a crimp-on connector or a bolt that has loosened. They are also some of the most difficult to find.

Found alternator plug disconnected after I was at home with the boat but when I tried to restart it when I was on the water the starter turns over fine like it wanted to start but would not fire up I've always thought that you could run a motor without an alternator tell the batteries went dead maybe I was wrong in my thinking not sure

Without alternator engine will run as long as battery holds out. You must have a good battery or 2.

Your coil might be powered off the alternator wire so it won't spark without that wire connected , or you might have a failing ballast resistor (if your engine has one).

It ran, died, ran again then died for good- Every time that's happened to me- Buick, Granada, Winnebago, Sun Runner, Honda 250 Fourtrax, Honda 200 Fourtrax-- it's ALWAYS been an ignition issue:
Buick, crank sensor, AND cam sensor, AND ignition module, AND the ECM-- all separate failures-
Granada, ignition module
Winnebago (454 Chebby), the ignition module attached to the distributor-
Sun Runner, the hall effect trigger inside the distributor...
Both Honda's, ignition modules..

our 89 Mustang was doing the same thing before we parked it 3 years ago, it MAY be a fuel issue but I'm betting when it's said and done, it'll be the crank sensor...

Check for spark! smile

The ECU and EFI systems can be sensitive to low voltage and weird things can happen when the battery gets low.

Or connectors get corroded.

Sorry I did not see this sooner, hope it was not too expensive of an event at the shop. On the VP's the electric fuel pump is powered by the alternator only when engine is running. There is a bypass that powers the pump when cranking. That is a safety feature so the fuel pump does not run on when the engine quits for whatever reason. Charged up batteries won't keep the pump going, has to be that 12v from the alternator, very specific circuit also. It is not the large gauge 12v output for the charging system at the alternator, it is in the wiring from that plug that came off. That is why the alternators for VP may be different than other cars or boats. Mercs use an oil pressure switch when fuel pumps are electric, it is off if there is not enough oil pressure (as in engine not running), with same bypass for power when cranking. You can short across those terminals on the Merc in an emergency, no such mechanism on the VP.
