The time has come, after 9 wonderful years and memories I sold my boat. blush It was my first boat so I grew attached to it. I was the only guy in our boating group that still had the same boat after all these years.

At least the reason we did is a positive one. We love overnighting on the boat. Now with three kids, which we didn't have back in the day as my oldest is 6 years old, it became to small. So we'll be getting a bigger one not soon enough.

The only thing is the 40' Formula boat I want is very rare in Canada on the used market. So I'll be shopping in the US. But I have to wait for our currency to come up a bit closer to par. We might take a sabbatical year next summer...

Hopefully I can count on you guys if the boat I intent to purchase is in your neighborhood! smile

I've been all over the boatiing map over the years. I had 4 boats before I met the current admiral-- 17' Hydroswift was my first, followed by a new 17' Galaxy Bowrider after the crank in the Hydroswift's Merc broke in half...traded the Galaxy straight across for 20' Kona 460 Ford/Berkekey mini cruiser, and then my 'wet RV', the 24' Reinell hardtop cuddy with the twin 318 V8 Chryslers-- then a 10 year hiatus. In '95 we started our boating adventure with the 19' Marathon bowrider. Then we decided we wanted to camp out, got the Sea Ray. Then the kids's kids started getting bigger so we got the SunRunner 252. After our neighbor scared the hell outta the admiral with it (that's a story) she wanted a slower and more straight-up boat, so we got the Party Cruiser. We ended up basically living on it, and we liked it SO much we sold our house so we could buy the SkipperLiner. It's a bit big to just bomb around in, so I plunked down $14k for a new Babyliner 175. The grandkids kept getting more plentiful- and LARGER, so we bought the Chap 262ssi (next to the SkipperLiner, by far my most favoritest boat). After a few years the kids stopped showing up to go boating, we started thinking about another pocket cruiser-- and less than a month after I spent good money having a carport built just for the Chap, I found the Regal for sale at a great price, and sold the Chap. And the Regal won't fit under the carport... [Linked Image]

And yeah, we still have half the boats we ever bought, but that wasn't on purpose...honest wink

Thanks for the comments everyone! I was set to wait a year...but the Formula model I want just came up here in Canada. Would you guys have reservations for the state of the drives? I always kept my boat on a lift so this scares me a bit. I don't mind the calcium deposit (as long as its removable with CLR) but its the metal pitting that I'm concerned about.

Why does a boat in Canada have Florida plates on the trailer?

Actually I just talked with the owner. I miss understood the ad. Its actually on the US border 10min from Canada.

He is the 3rd owner of the boat. Original owner was in Florida. He bough the trailer separately in Florida, where he has a 2nd place there.

Hmmm. Florida, eh? Trailered everywhere or sitting in water for extended time? Might be that the boat was used in salt water and needs some repairs? Always a question until the exhaust elbows are removed.

Are those bronze propellers?

Not sure what the pitting looks like up close. Can you give us a photo of the specific areas of concern?

My corrosion was caused by improper anodes installed by the dealer--one was aluminum, the other magnesium. Boat was in the water for two summers. I would suggest checking the anodes on each of these drives to determine if the correct anodes were attached. Volvo Penta has three different alloys, one each for saltwater, brackish, and fresh water.

If you end up considering painting the drives, please see my write-up here. The first pages are of the discovery period (How to do it, which chemicals, opinions of others, etc.)
http://www.boatingabc.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/567701/1.html

This is the page that begins the steps that I followed. They are as close to the Volvo Penta process that I could follow.

Thanks for the info. Your probably right about the anodes. They were change at some point cause these ones are installed facing the wrong way.

Those are DP-H drives. Propellers are made of Nibral, not Bronze. The DP-H drives were developed for the D4 and D6 diesel engines, capable of handling their high torque.
There are many documented issues with prop cav burn and resulting corrosion.
Here is just one example :
Quote

have had two boats since 2005 with the D4 260's and D6 350's and in that time i have had 16 new props all within the warranty period. three sets to the D4 one within 6 months from new and one set to the D6 which was in Dec 2008. Now that my current boat is out of warranty the Volvo agents are just fobbing me off.

in Jan 2010 I was told that the problem was down to the shore power coming in the boat on the port side. the port props where far worse than the stbd side. I was also told to swop the props over , which i did.

I lifted the boat yesterday and severe corrosion once more , but the stbd props (IE Ex port props) were severely corroded far more than the port props . Anodes doing there job , but the stbd props are eating themselves
Volvo have a case to answer.
i would buy a new set if i knew it would cure the problem , but i feel that it won't as the propellors are still suffering from corrosion. Volvo have done nothing to resolve all of our issues once out of warranty.

I would be very careful buying a boat with those drives.

It looks like the inner prop is bent.

Capn Morgan may have something here, but without actually seeing the props up close, it is hard to tell if they are pitted.

The drives themselves are damaged, at least the paint, and it appears that the boat sat in water--salt, brackish, or fresh is the question. It is interesting to see that in some areas/parts there is paint damage, but not others.

A fairly easy test is to verify very low resistance between the anodes, the drives and back all the way to the engine blocks and batteries. I am only familiar with my SX-A drive, so I can't offer much more than general information. There may be stainless steel braided cables connecting the major assemblies, which are fairly easy to find and measure.

Besides the ding the props are not what concerns me.

The area I most wonder about is all the way to the left were you see a stainless bolt holding the sterndrive to the boat. I see some pitting there. I agree the anodes probably weren't change when it went from Florida to Ontario Lake. Then at some point someone clue in and changed the anodes but installed facing the wrong side.

Here is what they should look like (not the same boat):

If it were me I would keep looking. I corrosion is a concern but also sitting in salt. You may not have issues now...but you will at some point.

I'm guessing that's not galvanic nor shore power caused-- bet a buck this problem is the same as mine-- stray current corrosion. Most common reason on 'glass boats-- the bilge pump hot wires being in the bilge water, and that water being in contact with any metal in the boat. The description above precisely describes my SkipperLiner's drives. Only my drives were lucky enough there was 700 sq.feet of steel hull to take most of the impact... ouch

I have been looking at this boat model for a long time, even since I bough my first boat. The above is the first time I hear problems with the props. I will have a boat lift so corrosion won't be a problem for me.

The boat has been repainted so this with the drives I agree with you guys. I decided to stay away. The hunt continues.
