This weekend we went to the lake house however we didn't take the boat because it was a quick up and back. Saturday friends of ours invited us out on their 25' tritoon boat with a 250 Yamaha outboard. We had 6 adults and 6 children from ages 15 to 4. I have contemplated going to a tritoon for our next boat.

Pros
• Plenty of room for the 12 of us, rated for 13
• Had a double bimini top that provided tons of shade
• Can leave your fenders out and not feel bad
• Loved the side doors for entering and exiting at the dock

Cons
• Had some bow splash going over chop
• Didn't handle as well as my boat when towing a tube however the prop was supposed to be changed out by the marina.

Hard to knock a nice pontoon boat these days. With the higher horsepower outboards they are being fitted with, there are not many things they won't do as well as most bow riders, some things even better.
But,,,,,,,,I'll be keeping my current boat a bit longer.

How it move wyith the 250 hp on it. On our lake you see quite a bit of the newer ones with towers & big out boards or even multiple. One day we were launching & there was one pulling out with triples.

They are pretty popular on our Arizona lakes. But we can count on mild weather for the most part.

I captained the toon while pulling 4 people on one tube, The boat was going about 22 mph and it felt sluggish. Maybe I wasn't at its sweet spot however I didn't want to go too much faster as my 4 year old was on. The boat was very responsive in regards to steering as it had PS.

That is a great article. I can't imagine what 100 MPH on a toon (or any boat) wold be like.

Quote

I quickly downloaded a GPS speedometer app onto my smartphone and we made another run. This time I kept close eye on the digitally measured speed, and sure enough, we broke the 100 mph mark and settled at 103 on the ride back.

It was just an amazing experience, and clearly one Rowland enjoyed sharing with others.

To be honest, the sheer sense of speed was a bit overshadowed by the fact that there was no protection from the wind. For the most part, I was just hanging on in a wind tunnel with no perspective of anything but the sensation that my ears were going to be ripped off my head.

Don't get me wrong, it was a stable ride, and at no time did I feel unsafe. But the intensity of the wind was a little distracting. Maybe another ride behind some protection may be in order.

One thing many toons don't do as well as their glass counterparts.... Age. The Party Cruiser is basically an experiment on aging wink --out of 193,000 "life" hours, less than 300 "use" hours... for the most part it's not doing too bad I guess. What's taking the biggest hit is the cabin side panels... Our dock neighbors bought a 25' Bennington brand new in March '08. You should see it now... The Party Cruiser looks 10 years newer. The side panels are aging badly, and whatever experimental seat fabric Bennington used that year failed badly. The seats literally look like they've been on fire.

I wonder how some of the newer 'spaceship' toons are holding up...?

But yeah, they're nice, great for lots of people! And only in a toon can you submarine a big wave and have most of it pass you on the deck floor! laugh

Sorry to hear about the Bennington unraveling. That brand had a top reputation as 'toons go.

FR, do they cover the toon? I think anything will deteriorate in almost 10 years with constant sun exposure. If they do keep it covered, ouch, that's bad. My boat is appraching 30 years and it's still in darn good shape. I do keep it covered, I'm downright cranky about that.

If it wasn't covered & in a uncovered slip i'd be surprised it lasted 10 years. It amazes me how often people will make a big investment on something & not take care of it.

There's a searay where we store our boat. It hasn't been moved in years and is covered in bed poop. At least it's covered. It's costing them close to $1k per year for storage, maybe more. They ought to sell it.

I agree CaptKevin.

Labor Day we are heading back down to the lake and this time will be bringing our boat with us and leaving it at the lake for our last outing in October. Since we purchased our lake house the pontoon family above also purchased a lake house and there is another family that is currently staying at our lake house hoping to purchase a house on the lake as well.

For most of the summer I've been trying to get these three families together as the 6 of us were pretty much in each other's weddings. We have all been too busy with stuff that no weekend suited us except for last weekend and Labor Day weekend as we will all be at the lake. It's nice that a lake can bring us together once again.

The Bennie does get covered for the most part, and is taken fairly good care of. It doesn't live full time in a slip because they take it lots of places, and their son only lives 2 miles from the lake and he winter stores it and basically cares for it. They actually think the cover itself is partly to blame, since it rests on top of most of the seating. Dark brown Sunbrella, they figure it just baked the upholstery. But it still shouldn't have turned like it did...the tops started browning like 6 years ago, and they were trying to get Bennington to replace them even tho the boat was out of warranty- I guess it didn't happen.. They did have a guy do some sort of spray coating after they started to brown, it actually looked great and lasted a couple of years before it started deteriorating.

Thats terrible the interior fell apart like that. Thought they were supposed to be a premium boat but it doesn't sound like it.

"They actually think the cover itself is partly to blame, since it rests on top of most of the seating."

On our factory covers, wherever the Sunbrella would touch the upholstery, there is a liner that keeps the chemicals in the Sunbrella away. I've seen this before on other boats, too.

Wonder if they should reach out to the manufactures of the fabrics directly since Bennington has been of no help.
