Wife and I have made plans to do the "Golden Triangle" this Summer. We'll start in Clayton, NY, cruise over to Kingston, ON; take the Rideau waterway up to Ottawa, ON; then take the Ottawa River to Montreal, and finally take the St Lawrence River back to Clayton. We are expecting it to take 9 days, but we will be time-flexible in case it takes longer.

One of the key reasons for choosing to take this "bucket list" cruise in 2017 is that Parks Canada is offering free lock passes nationwide for the whole year in celebration of their 150th anniversary. That will save us at least 400 bucks.

Anybody here done this cruise or parts of it? I've been to 1000 Islands, Ottawa and Montreal before, but not all on the same trip and we'll be covering roughly 400 miles of waterways we've never been on.

The plan is to spend some nights in transient slips or tied to public docks and others on the hook. We realize that 9 days will require a spirited pace, but that's how we operate and we have a history of packing vast amounts of activities and distances into our boating days.

Wow, that's a trip of about 375-400 miles. Doing it in 9 days means you'll be running less than 50 miles per day which, in your boat, should be a piece of cake. My boat, not so easy.

How many locks will you pass through on the trip? I didn't realize that Canada charges to pass through the locks. What is the normal charge for using them?

Like OH said, I look forward to lots of photos and a lengthy narrative of your trip. We want to go with you.

The slow downs will be at the locks. I think we will pass through 47 locks on the Rideau, 2 on the Ottawa River and 5 on the St Lawrence River. The normal price is $.90 per foot, per lock on Rideau, not sure on the others. The Rideau has a length limit of 90 feet so not much commericial traffic there, but the St Lawrence has ship traffic and sometimes delays at the locks can be many hours there.

We will be doing some off-boat tourism (hiking mostly, we both love to hike) here and there. Ottawa is a lovely city and the small towns along the Rideau are supposed to be really nice. That will slow us down too.

Chesapeake Bay to ICW to Hudson River to Erie Canal to Oswego canal to Lake Ontario to St. Lawerence River and you're at the start.

These videos show the route nicely:

I found those videos when I was looking for golden triangle cruise videos. The same couple did the golden triangle in 2013. Coincidentally, they have the same model boat (Tollycraft 44/45) I hope to live aboard in 5 to 8 years.

Or up through Lake Champlain...

So many opportunities, so little time!

Certainly a prettier route, but quite a bit longer, I think.

Who's in a hurry? By the time I make this trip, I will be retired.

Got my free lock pass in the mail this week. Even though I did not request it, they sent me a free national parks pass too. As it turns out, there are some touristy places on our route that we can visit for free with the parks pass so I'm glad they included it. Getting psyched for this trip.

Our plan is to start from Clayton, NY on July 10th. As we approach the end of the loop we'll be in touch with some friends that will meet us in Clayton and we'll spend a few extra days in 1000 Islands with them. We'll have a transient slip at French Creek Marina and they have a campground on the property that our friends will use for sleeping.

Have to change our plans, Lake Ontario is apparently flooded and thus, the St. Lawrence River is flooded. Most of the docks we would be using are under water. Moved our plans out to August 5 through 22 and hoping the water recedes by then. If not, we may do Champlain for a week and Penobscot Bay (the best of the Maine Coast) for a week instead.

I use to live in Rochester, NY and am subscribed to the local newspaper in Rochester through Facebook. Lake Ontario is very flooded and many waterfront houses are under water. From what I have been reading, it will be awhile before the water reseeds.

The water levels of the great lakes are high now. Lake Erie is 20" above the June average and 7" under the record high and Lake Ontario is 32" above average. I have friends that can't use their boat until the water drops about 18" so they can clear a bridge, it may be awhile.

We had a very light snowfall this past winter but in May Lake Erie received 150% of it's typical rainfall.

My trip is officially cancelled. Going to Lake Champlain for around a week, then Penobscot Bay for around a week, instead. Hopefully I can do the Golden Triangle next year...

I believe water level have finally subsided in most places the golden triangle would of take you. I did a boat trip close to the St Lawrence early July. It was eerie to see the blue line under water at locks. Meaning we couldn't dock while waiting for the locks to open. On the bright side no worries to hit rocks in some known places.

Sorry to hear your trip is canceled. Ottawa is my home town and you would of passed in front of my dock on your way from Ottawa to Montreal. Next time let me know. Your welcome to dock overnight or for a pit stop to stretch the legs and use the facilities.

It's the St Lawrence River that's the big problem. Huge parts of it are no-wake and I won't have an unlimited amount of time to travel it. I hope to do the trip next year. Would love to meet you.
