2017 Yamaha VX Cruiser HO. I know, I know. Sea flea. But, since we sold the Regal back in 2010 I've been landlocked and relying on others' boats for my time on the water. Last summer I bought a couple kayaks but I still have a need for speed. So, for some hydrotherapy on the evenings and weekends, I present my prescription...

Waverunner 1

Waverunner 2

The deal was fair and we plan to spend a few more weekends up at the cabin this summer, not to mention days on Geneva Lake and Lake Como here at home. I was out of my element somewhat when comparing the different models, but this one has the most powerful, naturally-aspirated engine that Yamaha makes, a 1.8L I4.

I cross-shopped some Sea Doo models but honestly all of their PWCs look like a chopped up Walmart kayak put back together with a glue gun, IMO, and their nomenclature is alphabet soup to me, totally unintelligible.

Unbeknownst to me at the time I signed the papers, this thing will do 0-30mph in less than 2 seconds and has a top end of 65mph, fully loaded. CJSA is taking this up to Minocqua for the annual Girls Weekend behind her trusty 4Runner tomorrow afternoon, so she'll be getting the first crack at some time on the water. I'm sure more pics will follow.
I'm really happy I'm getting back out there. d

Wow 65 mph with the non super charged model is impressive. My friend has a couple of FX SVHO - supercharged ones & they top out at 70mph. To me that is not enough to justify the extra cost of the unit & running premium.

Since posting the info on speed, I did some further research and there's some anecdotal evidence that says 55 is more realistic, 62-63 attainable with a light load & smaller rider. We will have to see.

The break in is supposed to be 10 hours, varying throttle positions, take it easy, limited WOT, etc. The good news about this is it should be ready to go for me by the time the girls have gone through the first 10 hours. I'll change the oil when she gets back and then I'll go have the real fun.

Sweet machines! Congrats.

Did you buy these as a package deal? What dealer?

As for top speed, perhaps I am an old fuddy dud, but I have no desire to go 65 MPH on a PWC.

Como would be a great place for these as it is not crowded and the water stays calm. However, you will be at the other end in about 8.2 seconds.

Have Fun!

Dock, I think my labeling created some confusion. I actually walked in thinking I would buy 2 of these things but CJSA and I were talking and she sort of reeled me back in. There's only one Waverunner, I picked it up from Action Power Sports in Waukesha. The places closer to home didn't have a whole lot of inventory, and the guys at Action were motivated to make a deal.

I'm with you on the top speed thing, I don't recall ever going that fast on the water but the fact that it is possible is sort of enticing. I can't see myself doing many WOT runs, as 50 is plenty fast, in my experience.

My main thing was really good hole shot. I got a ride in a V Drive Mastercraft last July and I haven't been able to shake that feeling of instant acceleration. The 1.8 is about 75% bigger than the base engine and as they say, there's no replacement for displacement.

I love Jet Ski's. Even after buying the boat I keep the PWC's and still ride them. Last week we were out on the lake with our nephew and his family. The kids loved it, which is good for me as I do not have to keep them all entertained constantly. They ride the PWC's while wife and I kick back in a cove and relax.

Congrats!

I too love rapid acceleration, but if I had one, I can't see myself not going 65 every time I got on it.

Mark,

I love the idea of a "mothership" and a few jet skis as well. We may build up to that over the course of the next few seasons... But even more preferable to that scenario is lakefront real estate, which is the near-perfect mothership scenario. It's tough to move land, but you always know where you're sleeping when the sun sets.

Dave,

The WOT runs are definitely on my radar as a daily or more frequent occurrence. But I say that now, never having wiped out going that fast. The first spill might change my mind. It'll be interesting to see what CJSA has to say about it. So far today, she's told me it feels dangerously fast.

Early morning WOT runs when the water is glassy, is the best. Lean into a corner before the doobalacky thingys bite in, you skip sideways across the water.

I'm with you on the early morning run (not too early, don't want to be rude). We have friends with one on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan that we visit regularly. It's a morning ritual for me, and my daughter has been been a frequent companion on these trips. We explore the lake, look at cool houses, and go fast from time to time.

I wouldn't want one personally, but I really do like having access to someone elses!

+1 on the congrats and I am 100% with Dave on the speed. I have rented them before and was probably a bit too aggressive for what the rental company intended...

I enjoy riding them but wouldn't want to own one. I like to go fast but also like to cruise and enjoy the scenery.

Nice thing about the 'runner is that it has a cruise control, so I can dial in a low speed and do exactly that when the mood strikes.

The girls hit 60mph briefly over the weekend, but only managed to log about 4 hours on the engine. Between weather forecast and traveling on business, it's going to be probably 2 more weeks before I have a shot at taking it out though, so those next few break-in hours are going to have to wait.
