I don't know the worst. Can't afford the best which is probably odyssey. I do like deka for most everything. They are made by East Penn. I use their sealed lead acid in most of my stuff. They make a really good AGM as well, but I don't think AGM is worth twice the cost.

I'm with Silverbullet on this & go for what i can get at a reasonable cost. Don't understand the cost of agm & would rather not feel bad about replacing more often at 1/2 the cost.

I usually replace batteries with whatever Costco has as their "best" battery. Part of that reasoning is that I trust Costco to not deal in junk, and they have the absolute best warranty program anywhere.

There must be a ba-zillion battery brands and models available. Who is to say which one(s) are the worst and which are the best? idn

Are you looking for the best or the worst.? smile

I usually go to the local retailers Autozone, Walmart, West Marine, etc. and look for something decent with good spec's.

Kind of an open ended question.
For my boat I use a Costco marine Deep Cycle/Starting Battery on bank one and a normal Marine Battery on Bank 2

For the big boat we have two banks of 2 - 6 volt batteries in Series. The Trojans we had seemed to last the longest, but those were also the most expensive. Interstate batteries were much less expensive, but only lasted about 3 years on bank 1, and I haven't replaced bank two yet after 4 years.

For my cars I used to stay exclusively with DieHards that seemed to last years, but after multiple battery failures way short of the warranty and the fact Sears started charging to change the Battery I went to Costco Kirkland branded for my cars. They did have a 100 Month warranty for while, but they have since made it more standard to a 60 month (I think).

For my Diesel truck the Stock AC Delco battery(s) lasted 10 years. Not to mess with success when those batteries died I actually went to the Chevy dealer to purchase two new ones.

In reality they are probably Johnson Controls batteries with an AC/Delco decal, as most batteries made today are built by two manufacturers , but with a different label depending on the retailer.

Best battery: One that is kept charged, even in storage
Worst battery: One that is not kept charged and is allowed to run down pretty far before being recharged. This comment excludes deep discharge batteries.

In our previous boat, we used Kirkland marine batteries. Usually three years before needing another one. Their marine batteries are have a one year replacement warranty.

The current battery is the one we were given with the boat in December, 2012. Have kept it charged all winter long. Doing well, even now. Oh, it is an Interstate marine starting battery.

I put an Optima Blue Top in my boat and it never failed in 4 years of use. I also had it on a trickle charger when not in use. I've used their Yellow Tops in my vehicles almost religiously until I put a Walmart Everstart in one of them (any port in a storm, right?). This proved to be a mistake for me although I know Frantically Relaxing on this board has had good luck with them. Apparently I got a bad one, after 10 months in service it would not hold a charge.

Despite the less than great experience with the hardware, Walmart's return policy was OK. They swapped for a new one without a hassle. I don't know what ended up happening with that battery as I sold the truck it was in less than a year later.

I buy the cheapest thing I can find at Walmart that fits. They usually last at least 5 years, so I see no reason to spend 100% more money for 30%-40% more life--maybe. I'd much rather spend $65 every 5 years than $130 every 7..

Aren't there only a handful of battery manufactures that create many brand names?

"Aren't there only a handful of battery manufactures that create many brand names?"

Not sure of the numbers, but the quality can vary from brand to brand, depending on the specifications.

Some batteries have new pure chemicals. Some batteries are actually "recycled" and sold--Hit it with the right current until it takes a good charge and just slap a new label on the side. Some are disassembled, the chemicals are "cleaned" or reprocessed and reused. All have varying alloy mixtures. Some have more metal. Etc. Etc.

I can only guess how a battery company can have different warranties, even in their own product mix or how batteries from the same model mix can have different lives from battery to battery. It's interesting how the manufacturers can build a 36-month battery and it fails in the 37th month.

Another issue unknown to the consumer is that since there are only a few manufacturers, the companies who have them built can change specs from one run to the next--whatever is available. You buy a battery that looks exactly like the previous one and is significantly different on the inside.

I use sealed regular batteries ,it all about A GOOD GUST charger smile
they let mine last 6-7 years ....

Good brand names last a year or two longer ....

Don't see the value in the new fancy ones , The no spill mount any witch way is appealing but at what cost ?

.02cents worth from Craig

I have written off any kind of marine or specialty battery for my boating needs with no regret. With a 19' bowrider, there's just not any serious demand outside of starting. We run the radio, blow up some toys, charge a phone, real light duty stuff. And since I do have a dual batter setup, I really don't lose sleep over it.

I don't get the smallest, as the 4.3 is a fair bit of engine to turn over, but I can always set for both on the battery switch if I've got concerns.

Blue sea has a GREAT alternative to a old school switch ..
Allows you to charge both automatically without switching...
You can use both to start in a emergency !

Far from an expert but this agrees with my experience. I bought a Battery Tender 800 that I use over the winter and my battery purchases have gone down noticeably. I leave the batteries in the boat and have the selector switch on All. Would need to check what's in there now, but I used to feel like I had to replace one of my two almost every year, now I can't remember the last time I replaced one.

They are about $40...$6 more than I paid in 2011,

I had my motorcycle on a battery tender however this past winter killed it. I attribute the batteries premature failure to lack of being used.

The boat batteries are original to my purchase in 2010, I take them out each winter and charge them each month. I place a reminder on my calendar. The time period between Memorial Day weekend and the 2nd week of June I did not boat. When I got to the boat I blew up a one person tube and had the blower on for about 5 minutes prior to starting. The boat had a hard time turning over. When I came back to the boat over Independence week I brought my charger just in case and she started up like it was just ran. New batteries will be part of my spring start up.
