The firstmate completed 3rd grade on Friday, A parent in my neighborhood invited a few of us 4 years ago for ice cream and it has grown since. His best friend, Dylan moved to Virginia last December and both of the boys miss each other. Dylan was able to come up for the end of year ice cream. It was a surprise for both of the boys and they loved seeing each other.
Saturday morning we headed to the lake with boat in tow. Sunday we went for an early morning ride as the weather was suppose to turn ugly. The water is chilly still however I did jump in each day (but not for long). The mountains in the background.
Dave R had a thread on using trim tabs in rough water and the water isn't rough. I am using my trim tabs so I can stay on plane at reduced speeds. As you can see we had the lake pretty much to ourselves.
Unfortunately Monday we needed to head back for home however not before going on a side trip. We drove through Bedford, VA where the D Day Memorial is located. It is on my bucket list to visit as it is about 20 minutes away from the lake house. There were lots of people attending the Memorial Day festivities.
We drove to Peaks of Otter and hiked Sharp Top Mountain. A former high school teacher hiked this mountain and gave me the idea to do it myself. My wife met this women a few years ago and was not very impressed with her selection of retirement activities.
The trail started off pretty easy
The view from the top
The view from the bottom, there were lots of motorcycles enjoying the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We had a pretty decent weekend. Perfect weather. We drove up to the small town (CLE ELUM) in the mountains of central WA to put flowers on graves where her ancestors are buried. ~350 miles round trip then had lunch and a nice drive home. We did it on Sunday so we wouldn't hit all the heavy traffic.
After we got home we hooked up the Whaler and loaded up supplies for the next 24 hours. We drove it to the slip, loaded the stuff on Beachcomber then took off to one of our favorite spots to overnight. Friends came and went on their boats throughout much of the day and on Monday.
Sunday afternoon we took the Whaler for a spin and spotted several deer on the islands. We were just idling along, being quiet and hadn't spooked them until my Galley Wench yelled out "Look Mike, there are some deer." Well, with the deer walked into the thick woods and disappeared. So much for a quiet sneak!
It hit 100* on Monday so about 4:00 we headed for home. A great 24 hours on the boat, time with friends to chat, time to relax and a great time spooking the deer.
Nice trip OH. No boating for us. The weekend weather was predicted to be a mixed bag and it was raining when we headed for the lake on Friday so the boat stayed in the garage. We got to spend some quality time with the kids and grandkids. Still a great weekend.
We are back from spending 10 days at the lake, looking back through pictures we did stuff early in the week that I forgot we even did.
My week basically consisted of waking up at 6:00 AM to go for a 3-4 mile run, come back and jump in the lake to cool off and enjoy the morning. Late morning consisted of going to the pool followed by taking the boat out. Came back to eat lunch and then head back to the pool followed by a nap. The evening involved heading back to the pool.
Early in the week there was an airshow/open house at the local general aviation air strip. There were real planes as well as remote control planes.
Tomorrow will be a good day since it is the first day of summer.
We are heading back down over July 4th week. This means I have 2 weeks of work and then another week off. I wanted to push it back at least another week however we have some renters then and it will also mean a short period between July 4th vacation and our annual Raystown vacation.
July is when we take the boat back to PA to finish off the last half of the summer.
My son loves anything that spins i.e. propellers, fans so he placed lawn darts on the outdoor units so when the fan turns on the fins on the lawn darts would also spin. He could watch this for hours. He is very smart when it comes to making things spin.
Both of the units are for my house, one serves the top floor while the other serves the main level and the basement. I have two units at home as well and is great in keeping the house conditioned evenly.
OH, those are great pictures. What a great family, too. And I don't want to forget how fortunate you are to have that setup at the lake. Your kids are cute, too. Love that photo of your son driving the boat--that look on his face and the thoughts going through his head. Reminds me of me, and I've been doing it for for over 50 years. (:-)
Have a great day of boating 2012 Monterey 224 FS, 300 HP Volvo Penta with catalytic converters
Thanks Jack, owning a place on the lake has always been my dream and soon became my wife's. The boys don't like to leave the lake when our vacation is over. As far as driving the boat, I only let him since there was no one on the water. He wants to take the boater safety course.
