Proud parent moment, my 9 year old son has taken a liking to baseball and is now in his second season of little league. Last year he was in Rookies which means it is kid pitched however on ball 4 the offensive coach comes in to pitch (unlimited balls, 3 strikes). He had a very successful season.

This year he moved up to Minors which consists of 9 and 10 year olds and will follow proper balls and strikes and you can also steal the bases and bunt.

The league has 5 teams and each coach can invite 2 players from their team to form a 10 player tournament team that will play in early May. My son was invited to play and is very excited. Each player gets to choose their jersey number and he thinks that is so cool.

I was invited by his coach to attend an umpire clinic as parents umpire at this level. I agreed to attend and was blown away with how well run this clinic was. There were 12 students and 6 instructors who are official little league umpires with each having 25 plus years of experience. Some of the umpires umped the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. At the clinic we learned mechanics of an umpire that will come in handy when it is my rotation to ump. We also got to practice our strike and ball calls and work on our 3rd strike calls.

When I got home from the clinic my son wanted to practice so we spent some time hitting, pitching and tossing the ball. Thankfully my yard backs up to the school where we have two diamonds.

Very cool.

Our son is in first year this year. I go to ump class this week. Much bigger commitment than other sports he has played. 3 practices a week and 2 or 3 games a week.

Sounds like fun!

You will really be in the big leagues when they ask you to manage the team. I am on my last season managing my youngest daughter's travel soccer team. It has been a wild ride and I can't wait to get off.

Congrats to OHFM!!!

What a great way to introduce a young one to a great game. Good on ya for being a part of your kids lives.

it is fun and frustrating at the same time. This will be my 5th year as my oldest, Cam who just turned 10 head baseball coach/manager. It will also be my 3rd year coaching my twins soccer team. Needless to say from this we are a very busy family. this coming off a ski race season in which we were traveling for 10 straight weekends. but...I would not have it any other way.

That being said, running the team can be rewarding and rough. Mainly because of the kids that don't care or want to listen and the parents who allow them to act this way. Then complain about playing time.

My main issue this spring is Cam was kept in the AAA and the only reason was they needed another coach. He is not the best 10 year old out there but towards the top. I've already clocked his fastball at 61 mph this spring. At 46', that is cookin' and there will be kids in our league seeing live pitching from another kid for the first time. It is not right...but the board could care less. So we will go out and play our best.

The above is also the reason our boat is on the market frown

Good luck to your son this season.

Having some many commitments definitely can make it difficult to impossible to make time to use the boat.

That is one reason for looking forward to being an empty nester!

WD, just wait until you are managing an team full of teenagers. It adds a whole new dimension!

I still remember taking my oldest to her first softball practice and holding her the whole time while she clung on to me for dear life. Funny to think of her like that now that she is graduating from college and quite confident in herself. I think watching young folks grow up though sports is probably the best reward for being involved!

WW - unfortunately I won't ever get to that point. I don't have the right "friends" if you know what I mean? Have to be in the boys club which I am not. I was not willing to dedicate my son to year round baseball and for that I'm on the outs. Hence one of the reasons we were put in league we were. They don't think my son will ever contribute to any of the all start teams. Its not a lack of talent...but perception. Sad really. But I'm 100% good with my decision.

If you ask me it is crazy how over the top some of the sports have gotten. Travel everything. Year round. To me it is just way to much. Have seen some of my friends go thru it. Leaves no time for anything else. For the right kid it might be ok but for the majority it is over kill.

Last night was our first scrimmage, we played the team my son was on last year and he held his own while at the mound. This year they will keep score however the league is about sportsmanship. I am all about winning by having the most runs however winning also involves having sportsmanship.

I was supposed to ump behind the plate however that was when my son was to pitch. I told him later when we got home and he wished I was the ump as I would have made better calls.

I typically leave from work and go directly to the diamond where my wife brings me dinner and I have a small tailgate party.

WW- it is hard to imagine your youngest being shy, she certainly came out of her shell through the years.

Went to the umpire rules class last night. Holy crap there's a lot of rules and exceptions/if this then that. I got home and told my wife, can't we just go play some ball?

Baseball is a good time of year as the boat isn't awake and there is no hunting.

Trying the get dinners coordinated and homework/chores done is a challenge.

But he likes it. Bumps, bruises, scrapes and all.

Your right about that! It was the older one who was very shy and clingy.

WD, we were lucky to find a travel team that is laid back and filled with good players who want to have fun. They don't always win, but they leave the field smiling. The previous team she was on was the exact opposite, so she left in the middle of the year, something that is frowned upon. The way I look at it, unless a sports scholarship is in the works, the kids should be having fun and the adults should leave their egos at work.

My Oldest son is 19. He's living at home, going to a local junior college and working. One more year of that and his plan is to go away to school.

My youngest is a junior in HS. He swims year around. Yes, it's too much but it's his thing and we won't take that away from him. He has a stack of college visits to make and college coaches are constantly calling and emailing him.

It dawned on my wife and I some time ago that if all goes according to their plans, they will leave home at the same time.

Honestly, that kinda freaked me out at the time. It's exciting, scary, sad all at the same time for me. In some ways it will be like starting over for my wife and I. Plus I genuinely enjoy my boys (for the most part grin) and will miss seeing them and will miss our conversations.

So I don't know if I'm looking forward to this empty nester thing. But I suppose it's coming regardless of my readiness.
