For the past 4 years my loving father-in-law has loaned us his Dodge 2500 diesel as he gave up driving because of health reasons. It was easy for his children as he gave up driving on his terms.

For the past 4 years we used the Dodge as our primary tow vehicle and when going on any long road trips as it gets great fuel mileage for a 3/4 ton truck and has an enclosed weatherproof cover. We've kept our F150 because the Dodge was never really ours and weren't sure what his intentions were.

This all changed last night as he signed over the title to us and we received new plates.

I joked with him that a few items needed to get fixed however based on his reaction I decided we would take the vehicle "as is". We have a great relationship and we both joke with each other. His biggest joke is that I married his daughter.

As far as the F150, my thought is to keep the truck and eventually hand it down to my oldest son when he turns 16 in 7 years. We drive it less than 5,000 miles per year so another 35,000 miles will be added to the current 88,000 miles that are on it.

Capt, he is a good guy. He is a retired fire fighter from Northern Virginia that got smoke inhalation. This resulted in his health decline.

Many of us are at a point in our lives where our parents are getting too old to do many of the things they have done for years. A HUGE activity for them to have to give up is driving. That often is their last big freedom--the ability to jump in the car and run to the store or just take a drive.

My parents have passed away and Tina's dad died about 20 years ago. Her mom is 101 years old and is doing just great, but we all know that her time will come sooner than we all want.

So, OH, enjoy your parents will they are still around. Make the most of the time you can spend with them.

GFC's words are so true. It is very hard to watch my parents & friends parents health decline. Have attended too many funerals in the last year.

So true GFC, my mother passed in 2000 at 58, my father is currently 76 which we see every couple of months. My wife's parents are divorced, her mom lives in Florida and is doing pretty well for 80. We had our children late in life and we are both the youngest of our siblings. I do wish my boys grandparents could get on the floor like they were in their 50's and be closer to us geographically.

Capt, in 2000 my maternal grandmother passed on December 14th, my paternal grandmother passed on December 21.

This is one reason why we have the boat and now lake house as my wife and I wanted to build memories for us now while we are "young" and not wait until we are "old" and retired.

As fare as the Dodge truck, I do want to do some work on it since it is officially ours. The first is removing unwanted stuff and put them in boxes. I also want to paint the door moldings as they are faded with either plastic dip or paint. Whatever we decide to do, it will have to wait until the snow melts.

A member of our camping group has a 2000 Dodge 2500 Diesel extended cab. It was tired looking and had a rusted out bed. She spent about $6k in restoration and the whole bed was replaced along with the other necessary items.

The truck looks new. Only problem though - if she ever has an accident with it and it gets totaled, she will never get anything from the insurance company near it's worth. That is the only problem when keeping an older vehicle.

I do love my diesel. Although it's newer (2016), I hope to have it for 30yrs, or until I no longer am around - in which case one of my boys will have a nice truck.

I can vouch for the rust issues on the older Dodge. My daily driver is a 2002 Dodge ram quad cab. My 1st brand new vehicle but the bed rust is getting bad. Mechanically it has been a great truck. Currently has 170k. Thought about getting a new bed but the door bottoms are becoming an issue as well.

Dodges are notorious for rusty beds, this truck has been in VA for most of its life and I don't drive it during the snowy periods in PA.

Al, as far as vehicle age, 2004 is the newest vehicle we own besides the boat and Goldwing.

Sure!

1992 Mercedes 500E -- links to more info at the end of the second page: BABC '92 500E

1974 Datsun 260Z -- early model which is essentially a '73 240Z with a long stroke engine. Later '74 240Z cars had the heavier 280Z body with the same engine, which was the poorest performing Z of the S30 series.

I bought this car as a street legal practice car back when I was racing a 240Z. The race car was sold to buy our first boat, a great decision that led to me spending much more time with my kids while they were growing up.

Here are some old photos of the racecar at Watkins Glen and Summit Point racetracks.

yeah, and we call the wife's parents 'hoarders'...
guess that makes us hippo kritz wink

Been going to sell 2/3 of that list for years, but (a) I don't have time to make them 'presentable', (b) I don't like selling stuff that isn't presentable, and (c) I really don't like selling stuff in general anyway. Too many bad experiences. It's why I gladly gave the broker 10% to sell my Chap last year, even though it sold fast, I didn't have to worry about the inevitable phone calls...

Just because a vehicle is free doesn't mean it wont cost you. I know I need new tires as they are starting to crack from age. I found the receipt and the tires are 5 years old with 60k miles. Based on tread I still have another year left however the age is the factor this time. I hate buying truck tires because they are spendy, especially E rated tires.

The ball joints are acceptable however they will need to be replaced sooner than later. Thankfully my father's-in-law cousin's son (a family member) is a mechanic so hopefully he can do the work while we are at a family reunion this June. He charges dirt cheap and cheaper when you bring along a case of Busch beer.

The truck does have 200k miles on him (not sure if a diesel can be considered a "her")so not to be unexpected that some wear items will need to be replaced. Sure beats buying new.

I needed a 20T press when I did the ball joints on my F350. Don't know about the Dodge though.

I have been happy with the Firestone TransForce tires on my truck. They seem to wear well, have decent traction and be priced reasonably. I am on my third set and now that I am not towing a heavy car transporter, went with the AT version that has a slightly more aggressive tread pattern. I am getting ~60K miles on them and last winter, I pulled a snowplow out of the ditch when he got stuck in the snow.

At least your free item wasn't a boat -- those rarely work out well!

I'll echo that with the free ford my parents gave my second mate. It's tires only have about 30,000 miles on them, but Costco said they were too old to rotate. Lot's of tread, and no cracking, but some concern with age. Did a front brake job within a month of getting the truck, which was 3 weeks too late. Lot's of little repairs that are mostly annoyances, but add up in time needed. Who would ever think that the dome light switch on a ford truck is in the door latch?

So you're saying the 12 ton press at Harbor Freight for $100 wont be up to the task? even for an F150 two wheel drive?

Well, my choices were either a 1-ton mechanical arbor press or a 20-ton hydraulic... grin

When I bought the 20-ton press, the cost to upgrade from 12 to 20 was pretty small. I'm not sure if that is still the case. The 20-ton press is quite impressive crunching disk drives that are going to be thrown out!

At Raystown we can replace ball joints as we've replaced batteries, brake lines, a few tails, and a trip to the emergency room.

I'll look at the Firestone TransForce.

I hear you on buying tire. Put tires my truck last year & wife suv this year. Boat was 2 years ago. Good ones don't come cheap but you get what you pay for. one area not to skimp.

There was one year I put 4 tires on my F150, 4 tires on my Civic, 4 tires on my boat trailer, 2 tires on my motorcycle (cost as much as 4 tires), and two tires on my bicycle. That year was painful.

Update, We dropped off the truck at my FIL cousin's house in southern VA over Christmas to get new ball joints, pinion seal, and a new fuel filter. It will be completed in a few weeks but we are not in any rush. Next in line will be new tires. He opened up his own business as his side work was becoming much more than a side job. In his garage he has a his hourly rates posted and I would be willing to pay twice the amount but wont tell him that. He did mentioned many times that he enjoys a certain type of beer so I may have to include a case along with a check.

you might want to check out Discount tires direct on Ebay. They have some great deals, free shipping & no tax. My brother just get a great deal on a set of coopers for his truck & saved $200 what it would have cost if he bought them at the local discount tire place - even though he had them mount the ones he got on ebay.

We still laugh at this event. Hopefully enough time has passed to be able to laugh.

But Bob, your run to get the drain plug kept me from leaving mine out that day! w

I have some pictures of this event.

For those not present Just Bob wanted to launch his boat a little earlier than the rest so he could watch ramp follies. Next boat in was myself and we floated next to Bob while the others are waiting to launch. Bob's bilge turns on so he checks out why and notices his boat is filling with water. Bob heads to the ramp to be dropped off and starts those little legs a run'in to his truck. Bob mentions to WayWeGo that he forgot the plug and not to launch. Bob gets his trailer and proceeds to cut in front of everyone waiting to launch and backs the trailer into the water. Wasting no time Mrs. Bob brings the boat onto the trailer just as Bob backs the trailer up. It couldn't have been done any better.

Since WayWeGo had some time while waiting for Bob, he decides to check out his plug. It was a good thing as WayWeGo's drain plug wasn't installed either.

What good times we had camping with each other and the friendships made that will last a lifetime.

I blame it all on changing the routine. Since we were camping about 500 yards from the launch, after our first day I didn't bother securing the stern straps like I always do. The next morning, I see the stern straps and figure I don't have anything to do at the stern today. And there was my screw-up...

"I blame it all on changing the routine."

I can identify with this. We launch and take out once a year. Each time, I make at least one mistake--unless I stop myself mid operation and think about what I am doing.

Boat looks really low in the water. Must have been a real tug to pull the loaded trailer up the ramp. And a long time to drain the water out.

Nah, it wasn't bad. Took about 5 minutes to drain.

The truck does have 200k miles on him (not sure if a diesel can be considered a "her") so not to be unexpected that some wear items will need to be replaced. Sure beats buying new.

Well June turned into December for getting some work completed. We dropped the truck off after Christmas, the truck is done however we wont be able to pick it up until March. The cost to replace ball joints, pinion seals, and a few other stuff was half the price that was quoted from a local mechanic to do just the ball joints.
