OMG, I am laughing so hard I can't breath. We have all heard the story about a young girl who ordered a doll house via the family Echo. Well, the story gets better. A TV station in San Diego covered this on their news. When the anchor person recanted the story, multiple Echo's in the viewing area heard the request and took action. From the new story:

Quote:
In a segment Thursday for XETV in San Diego, anchor Jim Patton talked about a girl in Texas who accidentally bought a $160 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies from an Alexa device.

The problem is that other Alexa devices at homes around San Diego heard Patton say, "I love the little girl, saying 'Alexa ordered me a dollhouse,' " and then tried to do just that.

Viewers in the San Diego area started complaining that their devices were ordering unwanted dollhouses.

I've looked at those on the ads and wondered what the heck I would use it for.

Kevin, what do you do with it? How do you use it?

We have one - great for playing music, asking what time it is, getting the weather forecast. Basically, all the stuff you can't do on your phone, laptop, or tablet. funny

I purchased a smart light bulb for grins and giggles. The set up was more complex than expected, and I had to install an app from the bulb mfg on my phone. After set up and config, Alexa can turn it on/off with voice commands. That is neat, but not actually worthwhile given the cost and complexity. I have already forgotten what I named the damn bulb, so not sure what command I would use to turn it on/off. ouch

To make purchases, you have to install the app (skill) and set it up - so it is not like if you get one of these you are automatically at risk of getting random products in the mail.

I was on the waitlist to get one prelaunch but either they never contacted me or I missed it. Seemed like a good idea at the time but never did get around to getting one.

I did get a "smart" plug. I used it for our Christmas lights while out of town. In the evening I just pulled out my phone and turned my Christmas lights on and then turned them off the next morning...from halfway across the country. Could mix up the times a bit...not that anyone was monitoring our house but...

I had to do some finagling to get all the lights to one spike bar on the porch, but it wasn't too hard and the new lights don't draw much power.

Funny. We have one. Every once in a while it will light up when it hears 'Alexa' from the TV next to it....

Pretty cool gadget. We may use it multiple times a week.
- Whats the weather?
- When is the next Dodgers or Lakers game, or whats the score?
- Whats the Phone number to Joes pizza on Garden Bl?
- Give me a flash briefing.
- Play some smooth jazz.
- Play John Klemmer
- Play Pandora
- 7 minute workout
- Distance from city x to city y
- Where is the movie zzzz playing?

Kind of cool.

I dont have it connected to any smart devices like lights or anything, but pretty cool.

Think of it like talking to your house. Some Star Trek/ Hal the computer type stuff.
