The On Holiday family is started a new chapter in our lives last weekend. The chapter actually started about 10 years ago and it finally became a reality.
It has been my dream to own property on a fresh water lake and it didnít take my wife very long to start having those same dreams. We started looking about 10 years ago however the price was always out of our price range. As I advanced within my career, made a switch in companies, and the housing market stabilized, the gap closed.
Our first goal was to own a single family home however single family homes in our price range doesnít give you the three important real estate words Location-Location-Location as it places you in a back cove that is suitable for a canoe. We then started looking for land as this would give us many more options in more desirable locations however we would be paying for dirt and not be able to enjoy the property until many years later. Our realtor suggested we look at a townhouse where the water quality would be very desirable and it would be an income generator for short term (weekly) renters which in the past we have enjoyed.
Eventually our goal is to sell our current house in Pennsylvania and move to the lake full time and keep the townhouse for investment purposes. Right now there isn't a time frame for this as I need to find employment in the area. Plus the school our children are in is more desirable than schools near the lake.
Last Friday we left our house at 1 AM with my wife driving our F150 filled both inside and out while I drove the Ram 2500 pulling a 6x12 trailer with the boys in the back seat. It was nice that they were able to sleep most of the way down and made the trip go much faster for them (and me). We arrived at the lake around 7:30 AM with one fuel stop along the way.
After settlement we started unloading the vehicles and getting settled into our new place and slept very well that night as we were up for 22 hours.
Saturday I did some minor repairs that came up on the home inspection report that the seller credited us. I came up way ahead doing the work myself with materials I already had in my hardware store (basement and garage). While my wife and her mom began stripping some ugly wall paper in the entry and kitchen.
It was a battle for us to get the list done and also making the weekend fun for the boys. We did take a dip in the lake and went under even though the water temperature was in the mid 50ís. We then played on the beach making a sand fort and played tennis in the evening.
Sunday I made breakfast and we put some beds together before my oldest and I headed back home as we have school and work. My wife, youngest, and mother-in-law are spending the week at the lake and I will join them next weekend.
Of course nothing happened unless pictures are shared so here you go.
GFC this was a long time and my wife has been great along the way. We have been to the lake about 5 times since last fall looking. The kids have gone through many property searches and are now enjoying the pain. The inside is a mess as we are unpacking.
I've had the same dream ever since I bought my first boat, but this thing called a "home business" has always pre-empted everything...
So, one of my quirks is figuring things out, and it seems your nw home is under the red arrow, but, based on your pic with the truck parked, there's been some shrubbery removal since the arial pic was taken... Yes? (just curious!)
You are correct FR, I am under the red arrow and the bushes were recently removed last summer/fall. The end units on have a 2 foot bump out in the dining room that provides additional space it also has a triple window to see the mountains to the left, I can almost see the "notch" in the mountain which is where the dam is located.
The neighbors are coming over to introduce themselves, apparently the seller didn't use the house too much and it shows as the carpets are in nice condition and the paint is fairly clean.
One night we slept with the patio door open in the master bedroom. I am not sure what time it was but still dark and the fishing boats were making some noise. It was music to my ears.
After closing we did a blessing of the house and I got choked up as I wanted to live on water before I even owned or could afford a boat.
My wife and youngest are down all week while our oldest is with me as he has school. We talk a couple times a day and last night the second mate of 3 years asked his brother why he wasn't down at the lake as this is your house now. I think our second mate is making the lake house his home. I will post more as we get the inside unpacked and decorated. What is nice about this house is that it is almost move-in ready other than removing some wallpaper as pink is not our color.
We want to replace the flooring in two of the bathrooms. My neighbor owns a flooring store and he is also a boater. We are currently in negotiations for a free week in exchange for some flooring. He was all over that idea.
The firstmate and I went down and back this weekend. The trip is 6.5 hours so we left at 2:30 AM on Saturday and arrived for breakfast. I ended up pulling over in a rest stop for a 30 minute nap as I was tired.
Saturday it rained/ drizzled most of the day which made home projects that much easier to get done. But hearing mostly fishing boats on the water did cause me to peak out the window a few times.
After having our family separated for a week it was good to have us all under one roof once again. We will be going down again a few weeks.
