Interesting. One of the points not mentioned is how the propset is no longer protected by the lower leg and the skeg.

Props are pretty exposed.

ouch

Less than ideal for shallow water . . .

This drive will be on the new Four Winns TS 222 tow boat being introduced at the Miami show.

Also on a few Cobalt, Regal and Bryant boats at the show.

It is meant to compete with inboard powered watersports boats, which have the same issues with the prop being exposed. The Volvo (unlike inboards)can be tilted up and partially out of the way.

It has some advantages with the props out of the way and clean water for the prop. As others have mentioned, props are exposed. Floating log hits may not cause the drive to kick up as easily.

It will be interesting to see if it becomes mainstream. It definitely is different.

The props sit 27 inches farther forward than a conventional Volvo Penta driveís wheels, increasing the overall safety factor. The system has two mechanisms to guard the drive against damage during an accidental impact. At Miami,The Forward Drive systems were installed in a handful of sportboats from partner boat companies such as Cobalt, Four Winns, Regal and Bryant.

Isn't this pretty much the IPS gear train mounted on an outdrive? I am sure VP will have some boat-to-boat performance comparisons soon.

Will these be retrofittable to older transom adapters?

I can just see at least one technician trying to re-install one of these facing the wrong direction. "But Boss. That's the way we've always done it!" (:-)

Wonder what it is like to replace the props while the boat is in the water. Got long, twisty arms and strong hands?

No performance gains with this drive over standard DP drive.

"No performance gains with this drive over standard DP drive."

So, is it safe to say that the sole "advantage" is the safety gained by putting the props farther under the hull instead of aft of the transom?

I can see there would be some marketing hoopla about better than this, better than that, compared to a V-drive boat equipped with the same output engine. Maybe like better/easier wake control for running the boat with different wakes or ride as needed.

Some more info:

Quote:
Sterndrive runabout builders, who were able to add a tower and jump on the wake-boarding craze a decade ago, have been left out in the cold this time because surfing a wake just a few feet behind an outdrive is simply too dangerous. The Forward Drive intends to address that issue.

The Forward Drive lower unit looks a lot like an IPS and is a little smaller than the IPS 1. Its case is cast in aluminum and bolts directly to a Duoprop outdrive mid-section. Unlike an inboard, the Forward Drive offers trim capability, which can be used to create a larger wake. It also expels all of its exhaust under water, so a surfer is not exposed to fumes.

The Forward Drive will be paired with gasoline engines from 200 to 430 horsepower. Volvo expects the prime application to be from 300 to 430 horsepower. All-new K Series propsets have been designed for the drive. Volvo says the Forward Drive will cost about 10 percent more than a Duoprop sterndrive. The key Forward Drive disadvantage is that, unlike a standard sterndrive, it canít be trimmed above the bottom of the boat. At full tilt the props are still about a foot lower than the keel, so it may be tricky to beach and will certainly draw more water. It will also require a special trailer to carry the boat higher in the back, with a cut-out for the drive, sort of like an inboard trailer.

Volvo says Forward Drive creates no performance benefits, nor any sacrifices. Fuel economy, speed and acceleration are comparable to the performance of a Duoprop. The Forward Drive does offer outstanding thrust and control in reverse because the props are never in the wash of exhaust.

Short Four Winns marketing video if you like.

"At full tilt the props are still about a foot lower than the keel,..."

To me, this is a real disadvantage.

Also noticed that the Four Winns boat has trim tabs for wake control? I guess the Forward Drive doesn't do enough to create a true surfer's wake--at least not on this boat.

Can anyone else picture just how insanely high above a trailer that boat is going to have to ride?

Gonna have to back that one in DEEP to get it on or off.

That is prop damage waiting to happen. Not practical for 90% of the boating we do. If I were into water sports that much I would have a direct drive inboard boat. Just sayin.

I'm a little surprised a wakeboard boat would have that much deadrise, but wudda I know . . .

I see no way to get the prop up for shallow water operation. Definite drawback.

I'm just too used to trimming up when moving through shallow water.

Trimming this drive up puts your props closer to the bottom. No possible way I'd consider this drive.

Obviously this drive isn't for everyone. What it does do is give people who are wanting to do wake surfing safely other options besides an overpriced one trick pony ski boat with an inboard.

This drive is paired with much more versatile crafts that are bigger, ride nicer, and in most cases cost much less then the alternative.

This is not for the typical boater and I don't think VP thinks it is either. VP and the boat manufacturers that will offer this drive want more of the water sports market. This won't be a widely used drive.

It eliminates the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning-caused drownings for the Teak Surfers since the exhaust is underwater instead of thru-transom. smile
