I went with the BMW 3 series because they are and have been highly reliable over the years. Best seller.

I'm with Mark, but Not sure reliability is their strong suit. Our 92 was 21 years old when it was totaled, but for the last 10 years of it's life I spent about $1000 per year just to keep it running. Weakest link was the cooling system. Excellent at keeping the gauge perfectly centered, but went through 3 water pumps and two radiators and three water level sensors in the final 8 years.
Great ride, great handling, the bodies don't rust, they maintain their good looks instead of aging over time. One time the car tried to tell me that one of my tires was shot, but I ignored the signs for about 7 months. I only found it after it sounding like I had a flat when going around a 35 MPH curve at 60. I pulled the tires to figure out what was wrong and found that 1/4 of the inner portion of the tire was worn though the steel belts. Car was still handling great and cruising smooth at 80. During a panic stop from 95 one time I could feel each wheel cycling on ABS and every pebble in the road, but she stopped straight and quickly.
Still waiting on Troop to find me a cheap one for my youngest to learn to drive on.

I am on my second 3-Series and love it. The first was a '97 convertible and it was a good car. No mechanical issues though there were some design things I didn't care for.

This one is an '05 convertible and it's head and shoulders above what the '97 was. I've owned it 3 years and have had zero issues with it.

I would expect if you were looking at a new car it would be vastly improved over what mine is. They just keep making them better.

You probably wouldn't go wrong with a Lexus, but the resale is much better on the 3-Series, as Mark mentioned.

Im with you on the maintenance costs, Justi. One of the reasons we're still considering the BMW was how her car handled the impact of the other vehicle; a Ford F250.

Now we're considering an Audi A4. Has to be used; won't take the new car depreciation.

Have always heard that Audi's have a lot more maintenance issues that BMW or Lexus. Beautiful cars though.

My boss is a big import buyer. Has had Mercedes, BMW & Lexus. Of all he says the Lexus service is the best & by far cheapest.

I wasn't a big fan of the 3 series ride. Didn't seem very smooth and kinda of noisy. This was a loaner car the dealer gave me when my 7 series was getting worked on. Could have been coming from 7 that expected more than I should.

Wife had a 2004 BMW 325 was a fun car to drive but small.

Next car was 2008 528 nice ride expensive brakes every 24 months

Replaced with 2012 Cadillac SRX. Favorite car of the 3. Service department is 100% nicer to deal with. At this point we would not purchase another BMW with how bad the service was.

I voted Lexus, based soley on my own Toyota dead-bang reliability experience, plus have never heard a bad thing about the Lexus service and reliability experience.

I have many friends with 4Runners, Highlanders, Avalons, Land Bruisers, Corollas, RX300/350, etc. I can't think of a one who is dissatisfied.

No BMW knowledge except what I hear and read, which is so-so at best.

EDIT: No idea of the wifey's criteria, but suggest showing her a new Avalon.

One thing to consider is which ones come with run flat tires. BMW switched to all run flats a few years ago. Much harder riding tire & they can't be fixed. So if there is any damage to the tire it has to be replaced.

We've had 4 BMWs and 0 Lexus's (Lexi?), so I can't fairly compare the two. That said, I've had a great BMW dealership, which has been excellent to us. My wife's X5 is a CPO we bought in 2010, the CPO warranty and service plan just ran out last August. It's had a couple of issues over that time, but all were covered and handled. Outside of tires, it had an issue with the battery and charging harness which was an expensive repair, but again, handled well. I've read that BMWs are expensive to own outside of warranty, we shall see.

The other 3 were mine, a 2006 330xi, 2011 328i xDrive and my current 2012 528i xDrive. I went from the 330 (which I got as a CPO in 2009) to the 328 because I wanted a few more gizmos. It was totalled in a rear end collision with a Ford Expedition, but I walked away completely uninjured. I wanted to try something bigger, so I'm 2 years into the 528. Great car. My lease is up in a year, I think I may go back down to one of the new 4 coupes, we'll see.

Anyway, yes run-flat tires kinda sucked at first and are expensive to replace. The 06 and 07 rode rough and loud because of them. The 11 and 12 are far superior even with run-flats. I have had a 2014 328 as a loaner and I didn't really notice.

I did think the '14 standard seats sucked, really hard, get or try the sport seats.

Anyway, I'll probably be sticking with BMW. Just my $0.02...

Another downside with run-flats & all wheel drive is if you get a flat you might end up having to buy 4 tires instead of 1. On all wheel drive it is crucial that all tires have the same diameter. Tire with 30k on it will have a different diameter than a new tire.

NEver been a Lexus fan, probably due to me not liking Toyota in general, so I cannot give an unbiased opinion. Of the BMW's and Lexus I've been in, I prefer the simple elegance of the BMW, Lexus seems to try to hard with limited materials. Again, biased. But what do I know, I drive a SAAB. I don't recommend one of those, unless you like quirks, then get one, it will be more than satisfying.

Very funny. No, the diesel was an Oldsmobile. I've owned some turds in my day, but that was the biggest.
