I have to say the Napa parts I was going to buy were not great quality. Luckily, the wires and rotor were wrong, so I didn't buy any of it. The brass inserts in the cap had a weird cross-cut surface to them, like they weren't loaded in the machine correctly. I wouldn't have felt comfortable with it.

After striking out at the local marine store too, I ended up at O'reilly Auto. Cap, rotor, and wires for an 85 Fiero 2.5 are what's on there now.

not to blow your bubble but what you did isn't legal. The cap has to be a marine version with ground meshes at the air openings of the cap.
Reason is that in a car fuel fumes will just go down to the ground and be gone. In your boat they collect in the bilge and a non marine distributor setup can easier lead to a big boom.

That's the big problem with marine parts being almost identical and exchangeable with automotive parts.

that's the distributor you're thinking of, not the cap.

Some (most) have the vents in the cap.

I had the old cap with me when I bought the new one. A red flag would have been raised if the new cap was in any way different to the old one, other than color.

I adjusted the valves with it not running and got one or two too tight. I did it the "oily" way and it's all good now. I suggest doing it that way first time. Takes 2 minutes, once the valve cover is off.

Engine seems happier now. Cruise speed of 25'ish mph is nice. Top with the aluminum prop is 41mph.

It's hard to say if it's better. I may try the other one to see if there's a difference and report back.

FWIW, no vent holes in my dist caps.

And I'll bet a dollar to a donut that 80% or more of the boats that blow up just after a refill AREN'T caused by a battery cable, or a starter motor, or the wrong alternator, etc... My money's on a spark from the side of a seemingly good-condition spark plug wire arcing to an exhaust riser or other nearby piece of metal. Of all the vehicles I've owned, the usual cause of a misfire has been a spark plug wire arcing. A wire on the wife's Mustang nailed me while checking the tranny fluid not long ago. The wires have maybe 15k miles on them. It's appalling to me how short a life span "good" spark plug wires have these days.

So true! I replaced the 27 year old wires on my offroad truck with "high quality" new ones. After 3 years of use I installed the now 30 year old ones back in. Guess they will last another 20 years.

41MPH is pretty good! I don't think you'll get much more out of her thn that.

Something to strive for; I wouldn't mind the extra 4mph. Does it come easy, or do you have to work the trim to get to 44? Maybe it's the prop.

nothing special. Trimmed fully in at a mandatory one passenger in the bow. Without the bow load I only get ~40mph.
Haven't measured with 2 ppl on board yet.
Prop is a 3-blade 14.25"x21p aluminum which came with the boat. With the 4-blade Solas Amita (14.25"x19P) I tested it was about 2mph faster and she wasn't as sensitive to the bow load (or lack of it), not worth buying a 3rd prop......
Both props gave me ~4800 RPM WOT.
When I still had the Stingray fin on it was slower, needed some trim and was less stable.

This was a few weeks ago. Boat rides make them sleepy!

In case anyone is wondering; I put the whistles on the boys life jackets so if anything happened, they would be able to alert someone.

Good idea, I never thought of that.

I hate that most PFD's seem to be black, shouldn't they all be bright colors so they stand out on the water??

They wanted yellow, Bass Pro was out of them. I agree, dark colors aren't a good idea.

Check out the Stearns website. The have many colors and types not seen in the stores.

I buy from their outlet page http://www.coleman.com/Products/31030/wake-vests-amp-accessories-outlet

Currently my boys have black and white jackets.
