It's been a year without a boat and the boating itch is bugging me. I'm looking at a 1986 Sea Ray Sundancer 270 w/ twin Mercruiser 170s. I think these are the 4-cylinder Mercruiser exclusive engine. What I've read so far is that it's a Mercruiser block, with a Ford head. I've heard good and bad things about these engines and am slightly reserved about these being enough power for this boat. I've read about the water cooled alternator regulator and water pump issue. Anything else I should be aware of? Any idea what fuel economy would be with this setup?

Thanks!

I feel your pain. We didn't get out at all in 2010 and half of 2011.

Sorry I don't have any info for you other than get a good surveyor and we love our Sea Ray. I learned that first part from a lot of good boaters here on this board. grin

My sister owned a 17 foot ski boat with a single Mercruiser 170. She owned it several years, no serious mechanical problems, but the boat was grossly underpowered. She finally got disgusted with it and sold it.

I do not believe that Mercruiser makes (designs/fabricates) any of their engines. They only outfit them for marine use. Mercruiser makes the outdrives.

So, the engine itself may be a Ford, but mostly Mercruiser and Volvo-Penta use GM engines.

Bottom line on that boat is *1986* and *340 hp* for a 27 foot boat, which seems a bit under powered.

Is this the one listed on eBay?

For one that boat would be underpowered with those engines, and for another, if they are the aluminum block/Ford 460 iron head engines (Merc did cast the blocks themselves and used a 460 head) I'd avoid them, they were not so trouble free when new, they are old now, lots of oddball parts. What you want, in a old boat to keep repairs cheap and easy, is garden variety engines and drives, like a 5.0 or 5.7 with an Alpha drive. Parts everywhere, no oddball stuff used for a few years and NLA (No Longer Available). Take it from someone who owns an OMC Cobra.

Avoid those motors, not worth the hassle. A friend of mine had the same boat/same power and gave up on it due to all the weirdne$$ of the motors, not a good combination.

Thank everyone! Think I'll pass on this one for now then. Was a real nice boat otherwise. It was the one on Ebay in Attica. I was worried about the weight/HP ratio also. Starting to figure out that there might be a correlation between all the Sundancer 270s w/ twin 165/170/190 that are out there and being for sale at a "good" price. I've come across 3 in just the past two weeks with the same setup.

Thanks again!

I thought that the 170 was a GM four banger, or is that the 140?

From what I have seen the Sundancers with twin 4.3 V6 GM/Mercruisers are pretty decent, but than the 4.3 engine has a good reputation, and develops HP similar to a small V8. Usually they are mated to Alpha 1's. I spoted one with twin 305's. I believe that would be the ultimate ticket. The 305 is a lazy engine HP wise, has good torque, and is built solid.

I love the Sundancer series, and was thinking about buying one, but have shelved it for now. I was looking at 270's with the 7.4 Bravo 1 & B3 combos. Not exactly overpowered, maybe even a little underpowered, but a dependable set-up, and parts are as common as grass. Granted a large single will never handle as well as twins, but it will cost less to maintain.
