Most of us who have snap-in carpet in our boats have (or will) experience the rubber backing on the carpets flaking off. It happens when the carpets get wet and the rubber backing sticks to the gelcoat. When you later lift the carpet you can see some of the black rubber stuff has stuck to the gelcoat. It's a pain to remove from the gelcoat and once it starts there's no stopping it.

On another boating website I found what might be an easy and cheap solution. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS YET, so can't comment on how successful it works. According to the members of that other website it works well.

What you do is "paint" the back of the carpet with tool dip. It's easiest to roll it on but it can also be brushed on.

To put it on, remove the carpet from the boat and wash it thoroughly (a pressure washer works well for this) and leave it outside until it is thoroughly dry. Then roll on the tool dip and let it dry completely before putting the carpet back on the boat.

Here's what the tool dip stuff looks like if you're not familiar with it. I get it at Harbor Frieght for $7.99 a can. I will say it works well for keeping the ends of lines from unraveling.

The usual disclaimers apply to the tool dip product and to Harbor Freight.

Sounds like a great fix. Someone else please try it and let me know how it works!

This is another option which I copied and pasted from another site:

Quote:
I've been meaning to post this for a couple of years, but well, better late than never.

In my 10 years of boating, this has to be the best, cheapest, easiest, most-bang-for-the-buck upgrade ever.

One rainy Saturday afternoon at the marina, I decided I was bored and went to Home Depot to find something to do. I wandered around the store, picked up some much needed dooflickies or chummy-jiggers (forgot which exactly) and then wandered through the flooring isle. One thing I was looking for was an anti-fatigue pad to put at the helm station. I came across this stuff and thought I'd give it a go. It came in much bigger rolls than I was looking for, but it was only about $35 for a roll at the time, so I thought...what the heck.

The stuff is easy to cut with heavy duty scissors, and I cut a section for under the carpet at the helm. The stuff was really nice to stand on and I had some left over, so I cut a section for the carpet around the cockpit table and the floor in the top section of the carpet. Finding it nice to stand on, I went back and bought another roll for the bottow (aft) section of the cockpit.

When I invited over some of my friends on Regal Row to check it out, all found it to be LUXURIOUS! A few headed straight over to Home Depot to clean them out of this stuff. By the time 2 weekends passed< I'm sure 90% of the others had this stuff installed too.

As a side benefit, the underlay also kept the carpet up off the floor. In my 4260, water would run into the aft section of the cockpit such that I had to roll up the carpet when it rained or when I left the boat for the week. This stuff kept it off the floor and prevented it from soaking up the water. What a benefit.

The stuff is made from recycled pop bottles, is a closed cell construction (i.e., doesn't suck up water) and is mold resistant. I've now been using it for about four years and the stuff never gets wet, doesn't break down and doesn't allow mold to form. It gets my 2 thumbs up and I highly recommned. It was the first upgrade I did when I got the new boat last year.

Here's the manufacturer's website if you're interested in finding out more and no, I am not on a commission nor do I have any relationship with the manufacturer.

They make the tool dip in a spray version now. Takes several coats to mimic a single dip, but the lighter coat and easier application might really be better for carpets.

The CSR eliteist's have been touting this plastic dip for several years. I think it is a tacky alternative to the rubber backing. Just replace the carpet with marine grade that has Action Bac. It's a polypropolene backing that will not "shed" over time. The surface of the carpet will wear out long before the backing will. I have it on our boat, and will settle for nothing less if we ever have to replace it.

Capn, for me, I'd be comparing the cost of a couple cans of tool dip ($20) vs the cost of replacing carpets and the tool dip would be a hands down winner. If I had to replace carpets because they were getting shabby that makes sense.

My carpets are in great shape on top, but they are starting to shed the rubber backing. I'd be hard pressed to replace them for a grand or more when I could pain the back numerous times for less than a hunski.

I get it, cheap temp fix until you absolutely have to spend a grand for carpet with proper backing. Makes sense today.

I think Wet Doggg is right. That's one of the twins. She's a little older now and things are starting to sag a bit.
