theblack Warrant Officer Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 1	i have a 1984 cheetah 176 pleasure boat..it has 305 mercruisier.engine ..well i was wondering if it had a mechanical linkage or a solenoid that engages the drive.....the engine wont run in foward...but it does in reverse.....the drive was working and i had a wiring short....now it wont go in gear.....its a good boat and needs to be on the water ...please help....

Typically there is a mechanical shift cable that could need adjustment or replacement if it has not been replaced before. 72% of fatal boat accidents are caused by boaters that haven't taken a safe boating course.

tpenfield Admiral Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 2,400 Cape Cod, MA	It is hard to say with an older boat, but it may have something to do with the shifter and an electrical lock-out. Generally the shifters do not allow you to go into gear (forward or reverse) unless the engine is at idling speeds. The electrical short issue that you had may have messed this up.
